Opeth’s catalog thrives on contrast: death-metal growls give way to acoustic hush, labyrinthine riffs dissolve into jazz-colored passages, and entire albums can pivot from ferocity to melancholy without losing the band’s identity. Mikael Åkerfeldt has made that unpredictability the center of Opeth’s appeal, guiding the group from the shadowed grandeur of “Blackwater Park” to the theatrical inheritance drama of The Last Will and Testament. This A-to-Z guide follows the songs that shaped one of progressive metal’s most adventurous bodies of work.

Opeth, formed in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1990, was the brainchild of vocalist David Isberg. The band’s name was inspired by “Opet,” a fictional city in the Wilbur Smith novel The Sunbird. Shortly after its inception, Isberg invited 16-year-old Mikael Åkerfeldt to join as bassist, leading to internal disputes that resulted in the departure of all original members except Isberg and Åkerfeldt. By 1992, Isberg had left the band, and Åkerfeldt assumed the roles of lead vocalist and primary songwriter, steering Opeth toward a unique fusion of death metal with progressive, folk, and jazz elements.
Opeth’s discography comprises fourteen studio albums, beginning with Orchid in 1995, which showcased the band’s blend of acoustic passages and death metal. Subsequent albums including Morningrise and My Arms, Your Hearse continued this trajectory. The release of Blackwater Park, produced by Steven Wilson, marked a significant milestone, garnering critical acclaim and expanding Opeth’s international audience.
This was followed by the contrasting albums Deliverance and Damnation, the latter emphasizing clean vocals and mellower tones. Ghost Reveries and Watershed further solidified the band’s reputation for blending heavy and melodic elements. Heritage marked a departure from Opeth’s death-metal roots, embracing a more vintage progressive-rock sound, a direction continued on Pale Communion, Sorceress, and In Cauda Venenum. The Last Will and Testament reintroduced death growls and became the band’s first fully realized concept album since Still Life.
Throughout its career, Opeth has undergone several lineup changes. The current lineup includes Martin Mendez on bass, Fredrik Åkesson on guitar, Joakim Svalberg on keyboards and vocals, and Waltteri Väyrynen on drums. Despite these changes, Åkerfeldt has remained the consistent driving force, ensuring that the band’s evolving sound retains its core identity.
Opeth’s innovative approach has earned the band significant recognition. The Last Will and Testament received the Swedish Grammis award for Hard Rock/Metal in 2025. Earlier, Watershed reached number 23 on the US Billboard 200 and topped the Finnish albums chart. By November 2009, Opeth had sold more than 1.5 million copies of its albums and DVDs worldwide.
Beyond its studio work, Opeth has remained active as a live band, embarking on world tours since the release of Blackwater Park. The group has issued four live albums and four concert-video releases, capturing the dramatic shifts between aggression, atmosphere, and restraint that define its stage performances. Collaborations with artists including Steven Wilson have further expanded Opeth’s musical horizons.
