The Eagles emerged from the heart of Los Angeles in the early 1970s, blending rock, country, and folk influences to create a signature sound that would define an era. The band was formed in 1971 by Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner, all of whom had built their reputations as session musicians and backing players in the California music scene. Initially assembled as Linda Ronstadt’s touring band, the musicians discovered a chemistry that prompted them to break off and establish their own group. Signed to Asylum Records by David Geffen, the Eagles quickly became one of the defining acts of the decade.

Their self-titled debut album, Eagles (1972), introduced the world to their signature harmonies and country-rock fusion, yielding hits like “Take It Easy,” “Witchy Woman,” and “Peaceful Easy Feeling.” The follow-up album, Desperado (1973), further refined their Western outlaw imagery, but commercial success escalated with On the Border (1974) and One of These Nights (1975), both of which featured chart-topping singles such as “Best of My Love” and “Lyin’ Eyes.” The addition of guitarist Don Felder and later Joe Walsh helped push their sound into a rockier direction, setting the stage for their most celebrated work.

By 1976, the Eagles had reached the pinnacle of rock stardom with Hotel California, an album that became a defining moment in their career. The title track remains one of the most dissected and celebrated songs in rock history, while tracks like “New Kid in Town” and “Life in the Fast Lane” solidified their status as elite songwriters and performers. The album sold over 32 million copies worldwide and won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year, firmly placing the Eagles among the greatest bands of all time.

Following the success of Hotel California, internal tensions grew, leading to the departure of Meisner and the release of The Long Run (1979), which produced hits like “Heartache Tonight” and “I Can’t Tell You Why.” Despite its success, the band disbanded in 1980, with members pursuing solo careers. For over a decade, fans speculated about a reunion, which finally materialized in 1994 with the Hell Freezes Over tour and accompanying live album, featuring the new song “Get Over It” alongside re-recorded classics.

In 2007, the Eagles released Long Road Out of Eden, their first full-length studio album in 28 years. The record topped charts worldwide and earned them two Grammy Awards, proving that their influence and appeal had not waned. Though Glenn Frey’s passing in 2016 was a devastating loss, the band continued performing, bringing in Deacon Frey, Glenn’s son, and country artist Vince Gill to honor his legacy.

With six Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards, and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, the Eagles remain one of the best-selling bands in history, with over 200 million records sold. Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) album remains one of the best-selling albums of all time, rivaling even Michael Jackson’s Thriller in total sales.
