Foghat became one of the best-known blues-based hard rock bands of the 1970s, building a reputation around pounding boogie rhythms, driving guitar solos, and a relentless concert schedule. The group was formed in Britain in 1971 by singer and guitarist Dave Peverett, drummer Roger Earl, bassist Tony Stevens, and guitarist Rod Price. Peverett, Earl, and Stevens had previously worked together in Savoy Brown, while Price brought the fiery slide guitar playing that helped make Foghat immediately recognizable. Although the musicians were British, their inspiration came largely from American blues, rock and roll, and rhythm and blues.
Foghat’s self-titled debut arrived in 1972 with a hard-rocking interpretation of Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want to Make Love to You.” The band followed it with a second self-titled release, commonly identified as Foghat (Rock and Roll), and then the albums Energized and Rock and Roll Outlaws in 1974. Their success grew with Fool for the City in 1975, which introduced the enduring radio favorites “Slow Ride” and “Fool for the City.” A combination of strong studio albums and tireless live performances made Foghat a major concert attraction in North America.
The group remained prolific through the end of the decade, releasing Night Shift, Stone Blue, and Boogie Motel along with the blockbuster concert recording Foghat Live. Songs such as “Drivin’ Wheel,” “Stone Blue,” “Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was a Fool),” and “Home in My Hand” showed the band’s talent for giving the blues a louder, faster edge. Personnel and musical trends changed during the 1980s, but the catalog continued with Tight Shoes, Girls to Chat & Boys to Bounce, In the Mood for Something Rude, and Zig-Zag Walk.
Foghat reunited its original lineup in the 1990s and returned to the recording studio for Return of the Boogie Men. Dave Peverett died in 2000, and Rod Price died in 2005, but Roger Earl kept the band active with subsequent musicians, including guitarist Bryan Bassett. Later releases such as Family Joules, Last Train Home, and Under the Influence showed the group exploring its blues roots while maintaining the power of the familiar Foghat sound. Sonic Mojo, released in 2023, brought another collection of original songs and blues interpretations, followed by the 2024 tribute single “On Tonsils & Sneakers.”
The band’s discography has also expanded through rare single recordings, holiday songs, early alternate mixes, official concert albums, and the 2018 Shaken & Stirred project credited to Earl & the Agitators, musicians also associated with Foghat. The live collection Live & Loud Across the U.S.A. arrived in October 2026, documenting performances by the current lineup. These recordings demonstrate why Foghat’s music has continued to connect with generations of rock fans, long after its first records appeared in the early 1970s.
