Nazareth emerged from Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1968 and developed into one of the most enduring hard rock bands of the 1970s. The original quartet featured singer Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew, and drummer Darrell Sweet. Their music combined the intensity of British hard rock with blues, soul, and a striking ability to reinterpret material from outside the genre. McCafferty’s raw, instantly recognizable voice helped establish a sound that audiences could identify within seconds.
The band’s self-titled debut appeared in 1971, followed by Exercises in 1972. Nazareth’s career accelerated when Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover produced Razamanaz in 1973. The album delivered the hits “Broken Down Angel” and “Bad, Bad Boy,” while the follow-up Loud ‘n’ Proud featured the band’s celebrated interpretation of Joni Mitchell’s “This Flight Tonight.” Other recordings from this period, including “Shanghai’d in Shanghai,” “My White Bicycle,” and “Holy Roller,” showed how effectively Nazareth could blend powerful guitar-driven arrangements with memorable melodies.
The 1975 album Hair of the Dog became a cornerstone of the group’s international reputation. Its tough title track was balanced by the unforgettable recording of “Love Hurts,” which became a major hit in North America and elsewhere. Throughout the decade, albums such as Close Enough for Rock ‘n’ Roll, Play ‘n’ the Game, Expect No Mercy, and No Mean City expanded the catalog. Nazareth built a formidable live reputation, later captured on ‘Snaz, while maintaining a steady schedule of studio releases.
As the 1980s unfolded, the band continued exploring heavy rock, ballads, and more polished production on records including Malice in Wonderland, The Fool Circle, 2XS, and Sound Elixir. “Dream On,” “Love Leads to Madness,” and “Where Are You Now” demonstrated another side of their songwriting and recording. Numerous lineup changes followed over the decades, including the deaths of Darrell Sweet in 1999, Manny Charlton in 2022, and Dan McCafferty in 2022. Pete Agnew continued as the band’s central link to its original lineup, joined in later years by guitarist Jimmy Murrison, drummer Lee Agnew, and vocalist Carl Sentance.
Nazareth’s later studio albums, from No Jive and Move Me to The Newz, Rock ‘n’ Roll Telephone, Tattooed on My Brain, and Surviving the Law, reflect a career that extended over half a century. The recordings include more than familiar rock radio hits: there are deep album cuts, original non-album singles, B-sides, soundtrack songs, live-only covers, and archival recordings. This A-to-Z list brings those releases together and places each recording alongside its original album or other official release.
