John Fogerty occupies a special place in American rock and roll history. Born in Berkeley, California, in 1945, he became one of the defining voices and songwriters of his generation through Creedence Clearwater Revival, blending rockabilly, blues, country, gospel, and rhythm and blues into a sound that seemed to come from the American South even though the band grew up in Northern California. His unmistakable voice and lean guitar arrangements helped turn songs such as “Proud Mary,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Fortunate Son,” and “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” into enduring classics.
Fogerty’s recording story started long before Creedence became a household name. He played with his brother Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook, and Doug Clifford in Tommy Fogerty and the Blue Velvets and later the Golliwogs, which issued singles during the 1960s before becoming Creedence Clearwater Revival. Between 1968 and 1972, CCR released seven studio albums, and John wrote or sang most of the recordings that made the group famous. Even on albums filled with memorable singles, deeper tracks such as “Ramble Tamble,” “Effigy,” and “Born to Move” revealed his imagination as an arranger and bandleader.
After Creedence broke up, Fogerty followed a path of his own. His 1973 album The Blue Ridge Rangers explored older country and traditional songs, while his self-titled 1975 album produced “Rockin’ All Over the World” and “Almost Saturday Night.” Following a lengthy recording hiatus, he returned with Centerfield in 1985, delivering “The Old Man Down the Road,” “Rock and Roll Girls,” and the baseball anthem “Centerfield.” Later albums such as Blue Moon Swamp, Deja Vu All Over Again, and Revival showed that his talent extended well beyond his original band.
Fogerty has also revisited his earlier songs in ways that form part of his recorded history. On Wrote a Song for Everyone in 2013, he collaborated with musicians from different generations, while Fogerty’s Factory captured performances with members of his family in 2020. After regaining control of his Creedence song publishing rights, he recorded twenty new versions of his best-known CCR compositions for Legacy: The Creedence Clearwater Revival Years in 2025. Those recordings stand alongside his earlier work as distinctive performances rather than replacements for the originals.
This A-to-Z collection brings together the recordings Fogerty made as a solo artist, his work with Creedence Clearwater Revival, the earlier Blue Velvets and Golliwogs sides, and important officially released collaborations and alternate performances. The song titles run alphabetically, with the original release or the specific later recording identified beside each entry. From the earliest regional singles to the recordings of recent decades, the music reflects a career built around compelling melodies, unforgettable guitar lines, and a voice instantly recognizable to rock fans.
