KISS was formed in New York City in January 1973. They were a groundbreaking band for many reasons, including the makeup and their stripped down rock and roll sound that developed a fan base that would eventually be called an army. The band has seen several lineup changes over the years, with a total of twelve official members. Paul and Gne have been the only constant members since the groups inception. This list only includes musicians who became official members of the band KISS. It does not include touring or session musicians who have performed on Kiss albums or Kiss shows.
Paul Stanley
Paul Stanley, rhythm guitarist and co-lead vocalist, co-founded KISS in 1973. Stanley’s tenure with the band spans its entire history, contributing significantly to all of the band’s albums. Known for his onstage persona as the “Starchild,” Stanley’s songwriting and charismatic performances have been central to the band’s identity. Outside of KISS, Stanley has released solo albums, including 1978’s “Paul Stanley” and has pursued projects like painting and musical theater, showcasing his versatile talents.
Gene Simmons
Gene Simmons, bassist and co-lead vocalist, is another co-founder of KISS. Known for his “Demon” persona, Simmons’ flamboyant stage presence and distinctive bass playing have been staples of the band’s sound. He has appeared on all of KISS’s albums, contributing heavily to their songwriting and direction. Beyond KISS, Simmons is a successful entrepreneur, actor, and television personality, known for his reality show “Gene Simmons Family Jewels” and extensive business ventures. Gene Simmons could write a book on how to sell merchandise.
Ace Frehley
Everyone loved Ace. As lead guitarist Ace Frehley, known as the “Spaceman,” was an original member of KISS from 1973 until his departure in 1982. He contributed to the classic KISS sound with his distinctive guitar solos and compositions. Frehley’s 1978 solo album was among the most successful of the KISS members’ solo efforts, fueled by the hit single New York Groove. After leaving KISS, he pursued a successful solo career, including his band Frehley’s Comet.
Peter Criss
Drummer Peter Criss, or the “Catman,” was a founding member of KISS, known for his raspy voice and jazz-influenced drumming style. He is best known for his massive hit single “Beth,” which was released on the Destroyer album. Criss was with the band until 1980 and was involved in subsequent reunions until his final departure in 2004. Outside of KISS, Criss has released several solo albums and an autobiography detailing his life and times with the band.
Eric Carr
Eric Carr joined KISS in 1980 as the drummer after Peter Criss’s departure, adopting the “Fox” persona. Known for his powerful drumming and vibrant energy, Carr was a beloved member until his untimely death in 1991. He played on albums like “Creatures of the Night” and “Hot in the Shade,” leaving a lasting legacy with his unique style and dedication to the band’s evolving sound.
Vinnie Vincent
Guitarist Vinnie Vincent joined KISS in 1982, taking on the “Ankh Warrior” persona. Vincent’s tenure was brief but impactful, contributing to the albums “Creatures of the Night” and “Lick It Up,” helping lead KISS into a new, unmasked era. Despite his contentious departure in 1984, Vincent’s guitar work and songwriting had a significant influence on the band’s mid-80s sound. He went on to form the Vinnie Vincent Invasion.
Mark St. John
Mark St. John briefly joined KISS as a lead guitarist in 1984, playing on the album “Animalize.” His time with the band was short due to health issues that prevented him from touring extensively. Despite his brief tenure, “Animalize” remains a fan favorite and a testament to his technical guitar skills.
Bruce Kulick
Bruce Kulick became the lead guitarist for KISS in 1984 and remained with the band until 1996. His tenure is marked by a return to a straightforward, hard rock sound, contributing to albums like “Asylum,” “Crazy Nights,” and “Revenge.” Kulick’s guitar work is highly regarded by fans for its technical proficiency and melodic sensibility. Eric Singer
Eric Singer first joined KISS as the drummer in 1991 after Eric Carr’s passing, known for his “Catman” persona. He has been with the band for multiple stints, contributing to albums like “Revenge” and “Sonic Boom.” Singer’s powerful drumming and versatility have made him a mainstay in the band’s later years. Outside of KISS, Singer has played with artists like Alice Cooper and has a reputation as one of rock’s most prolific drummers.
Tommy Thayer
Tommy Thayer, the current lead guitarist, took on the “Spaceman” persona, joining KISS in 2002. He has contributed to albums like “Sonic Boom” and “Monster,” continuing the band’s legacy into the new millennium. Thayer’s style pays homage to the band’s classic era while bringing his own flair to the music. Prior to KISS, Thayer was a member of the band Black ‘n Blue and worked closely with KISS in various capacities, making his transition to lead guitarist a natural evolution.
