A South London upbringing and a serious early commitment to writing set Lola Young on a path that led to major award recognition and a genuine chart breakthrough. Her full name is Lola Emily Mary Young, and her date of birth is January 4, 2001. She was born in Croydon and grew up in Beckenham. She has been active professionally since 2019, and her releases have been connected with Capitol Records and Island Records.

Her start in music was hands-on and public at an early age. She began writing songs at age eleven and started performing at open-mic nights at age fourteen. From Year ten, she attended BRIT School. In January 2016, she won the under-16 category at Open Mic UK and also appeared on Got What It Takes?, reaching the finals. The following year, Nick Shymansky met her after a performance at The Bedford, and he later became her joint manager with Nick Huggett.

Her recorded career began in 2019 with her debut single, “6 Feet Under,” released in October. She followed quickly with her first EP, Intro, released November 7, 2019, and promotion for that project was interrupted when she developed a cyst on her vocal cords and underwent surgery. In March 2020, she released “Pick Me Up,” and later in 2020, she put out “None for You” and the EP Renaissance, released April 28, 2020. In July 2020, she released “Woman,” paired with a video the next month. She later released a third EP, After Midnight, on August 20, 2021.

A wider audience arrived through a very specific holiday spotlight. In 2021, she recorded a version of “Together in Electric Dreams,” written by Giorgio Moroder and Philip Oakey, for that year’s John Lewis Christmas advert. Around that period, she was nominated for the Brit Awards Rising Star award and placed fourth in the BBC Sound of… In January 2022, she released “So Sorry” and performed it on The Graham Norton Show. Between November 2022 and May 2023, she released “Stream of Consciousness,” “Annabel’s House,” “Don’t Hate Me,” “What Is It About Me,” and “Money,” and those tracks fed into her debut studio album, My Mind Wanders and Sometimes Leaves Completely, released May 26, 2023.

Her second studio album delivered the defining hit and the sharpest commercial rise. This Wasn’t Meant for You Anyway was released June 21, 2024, and later reached the top twenty of the UK Albums Chart after “Messy” took off on TikTok and led to broader chart attention. “Messy” reached number one on the UK singles chart, number one in Australia and Ireland, and number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100. The track also earned multiple certifications, including two times platinum in the United Kingdom, five times platinum in Australia, four times platinum in Canada, two times platinum in the United States, three times platinum in New Zealand, and diamond in France. Another single, “Conceited,” later reached number 63 on the UK singles chart and earned a silver certification in the United Kingdom.

By 2025, awards and high-profile appearances had become part of the story, and her catalog expanded to a third album. She was named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30, won the Ivor Novello Awards Rising Star Award, and received the ASCAP London Music Awards Vanguard Award. She performed “Messy” at the Brit Awards, and she was nominated for British Pop Act at the 2025 ceremony. In May 2025, she released “One Thing,” and its music video was later nominated for Best Pop Video at the 2025 UK Music Video Awards. She also supported Billie Eilish in Paris on two June dates in 2025. Her third studio album, I’m Only F**king Myself, was released September 19, 2025, and it debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart, while “One Thing,” “D£aler,” and “Post Sex Clarity” peaked at numbers eighteen, twenty-seven, and sixty on the UK singles chart.

Beyond music-industry milestones, her public life has included specific health, identity, and advocacy moments tied to her work and visibility. She has discussed writing about experiences connected to schizoaffective disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bisexuality, and drug use, and she spent five weeks in drug rehabilitation starting in November 2024 to address cocaine addiction. Her team later hired a sober coach after a relapse. In August 2025, she joined several other acts in calling on Keir Starmer to block drilling at the Rosebank oil and gas field.
