Paul McCartney and Wings were formed in 1971, following the dissolution of The Beatles, as Paul McCartney sought a new creative direction after the most iconic band in music history had come to an end. McCartney, still processing the breakup, assembled the group with his wife Linda McCartney on keyboards and vocals, Denny Laine—formerly of the Moody Blues—on guitar and vocals, and drummer Denny Seiwell, who had worked with McCartney on his second solo album Ram. The band would undergo several lineup changes over its tenure, but McCartney remained the group’s central force, using it as both a creative outlet and a new musical identity.

The debut album, Wild Life, was released in December 1971 and received a mixed critical reception. It was quickly followed by Red Rose Speedway in 1973, which helped elevate the band’s profile with the hit single “My Love,” a lush ballad that topped the Billboard Hot 100. Though the album had its detractors, it solidified Wings as a commercial force, and it marked a turning point in McCartney’s post-Beatles solo career. The same year, McCartney collaborated with George Martin for the orchestration of “Live and Let Die,” the title song for the James Bond film of the same name. The track became a major hit and remains one of McCartney’s most enduring anthems.

Wings’ third album, Band on the Run (1973), is widely regarded as their artistic and commercial high point. Recorded under difficult conditions in Lagos, Nigeria, with only Paul, Linda, and Denny Laine after the sudden departure of other members, the album showcased McCartney’s resilience and versatility. It featured several of the band’s best-known tracks, including “Jet,” “Let Me Roll It,” and the title track, “Band on the Run.” The album reached No. 1 in both the UK and the US, went triple platinum in the United States, and won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus.

Wings followed up with Venus and Mars (1975), which continued their commercial streak and introduced new members, including guitarist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Joe English. The album produced hits like “Listen to What the Man Said” and saw the band embark on an ambitious world tour. In 1976, Wings released Wings at the Speed of Sound, an album notable for featuring each band member on lead vocals. It contained the US chart-topping single “Silly Love Songs,” McCartney’s tongue-in-cheek response to critics who accused him of writing lightweight material.

In 1976, the band undertook the Wings Over the World tour, their most extensive and successful live outing. The tour culminated in a live triple album, Wings over America, and the concert film Rockshow. These releases captured the band’s tight musicianship and McCartney’s ability to command an arena as both a singer and multi-instrumentalist. This period represented the peak of Wings’ popularity, with their sound and style helping to define mid-1970s rock while differentiating McCartney from his Beatles legacy.

Their final studio album, Back to the Egg (1979), was recorded with a new lineup including guitarist Laurence Juber and drummer Steve Holley. Although the album received mixed reviews and did not match the commercial highs of earlier releases, it included the Grammy-winning track “Rockestra Theme,” which featured contributions from an all-star ensemble including Pete Townshend, David Gilmour, and John Bonham. The album marked the beginning of the end for Wings, as internal changes and external pressures began to take their toll.

Wings disbanded in 1981 following a series of complications, including McCartney’s arrest in Japan for marijuana possession in 1980, which led to the cancellation of the band’s tour. The final blow came after John Lennon’s murder later that year, prompting McCartney to retreat from public performances for a time. While Wings had lasted for a decade—a remarkable feat for any band—it had served its purpose as a bridge between The Beatles and McCartney’s solo career, producing a string of platinum albums, chart-topping singles, and iconic performances.

During their original run, Wings released seven studio albums, one live album, and over twenty singles, many of which became international hits. The band achieved five No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned several awards, including a Grammy and an Academy Award nomination for “Live and Let Die.” Their musical style combined rock, pop, and orchestral elements, often marked by McCartney’s knack for melody, Linda’s harmonies, and tight ensemble playing.

The band’s legacy has been reevaluated in recent years, with Band on the Run in particular receiving widespread acclaim as one of the greatest rock albums of the 1970s. Critics and fans alike have come to recognize Wings as more than just a post-Beatles project—they were a highly successful and influential band in their own right. Their work laid the foundation for McCartney’s longevity in popular music and proved his ability to thrive creatively outside of his Beatles identity.

Outside of the band, McCartney and his wife Linda became active in causes such as animal rights, vegetarianism, and environmental activism. Linda was also a prominent photographer and published cookbooks, while continuing to perform with Wings throughout their run. Together, the McCartneys exemplified a rare partnership in both life and music, challenging conventional gender roles in rock and bringing a sense of warmth and unity to the group’s public image.

Following the end of Wings, McCartney returned to solo work and eventually embraced a more retrospective approach to his legacy, but the spirit of Wings remained present in his live shows and recordings. Songs like “Jet,” “Band on the Run,” and “Let Me Roll It” remain staples of his concert setlists and are celebrated by fans of multiple generations.

Later archival releases expanded the official Wings catalog. Wings over Europe arrived in 2018, One Hand Clapping received its first official audio release in 2024, the career-spanning WINGS collection followed in 2025, and Man on the Run – Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack added newly issued recordings in 2026.
