Roxette took shape in Halmstad, Sweden, in 1986, when Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson joined forces after each had already built a strong profile in Swedish music. Gessle had emerged as a songwriter and performer with Gyllene Tider, while Fredriksson had established herself as a successful solo singer. Their partnership turned into something much bigger than a side project. What began as a Swedish pop collaboration quickly developed into one of the most commercially successful duos in international pop history.
Their first album, Pearls of Passion, arrived in 1986 and gave them early success in Sweden, but the breakthrough that changed everything was Look Sharp! in 1988. That album launched Roxette into the global market and produced “The Look,” “Dressed for Success,” “Dangerous,” and “Listen to Your Heart.” “The Look” became a surprise international explosion and helped introduce the group to American audiences, while “Listen to Your Heart” reinforced that success by reaching the top of the charts as well. By the end of that cycle, Roxette were no longer simply a Swedish act crossing over. They had become a genuine worldwide force.
The next phase pushed them even further. Joyride, released in 1991, became another major international success and delivered some of the biggest songs of their career, including “Joyride,” “Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave),” and “Spending My Time.” Around the same era, “It Must Have Been Love,” originally recorded earlier and later tied to Pretty Woman, became one of the duo’s defining songs and one of their biggest global hits. With “The Look,” “Listen to Your Heart,” “It Must Have Been Love,” and “Joyride,” Roxette achieved four number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, an extraordinary accomplishment for any act, especially one coming from outside the United States.
Roxette kept that momentum moving through the 1990s with Tourism in 1992 and Crash! Boom! Bang! in 1994. Tourism blended live and studio recordings and produced “How Do You Do!” and “Queen of Rain,” while Crash! Boom! Bang! added another round of major singles, including “Sleeping in My Car,” “Crash! Boom! Bang!,” “Fireworks,” and “Run to You.” By this point the duo had built a catalog that worked across multiple markets, with strong chart showings throughout Europe, Australia, and Latin America, while also maintaining a recognizable identity built around Gessle’s songwriting and Fredriksson’s vocal power.
Their later studio work continued across another two decades. Roxette released Have a Nice Day in 1999, Room Service in 2001, Charm School in 2011, Travelling in 2012, and Good Karma in 2016, bringing their total to 10 studio albums. Songs such as “Wish I Could Fly,” “Anyone,” and “She’s Got Nothing On (But the Radio)” kept the duo active on international charts even as the music industry changed around them. Their comeback period in the 2010s showed that the group still had a loyal audience and a durable catalog that continued to sell long after their original peak years.
Awards, sales, and chart performance tell the scale of what Roxette achieved. The duo sold more than 75 million records worldwide and became Sweden’s second best selling music act after ABBA. They scored 19 UK Top 40 hits and 4 number one singles in the United States. Their work also brought them major recognition in Sweden and abroad, and the group’s commercial reach extended across Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and Asia. That global consistency is a large part of why Roxette remain so loved. They wrote direct, memorable songs, and they delivered them with a combination of melodic instinct and vocal force that translated almost everywhere.
Outside the work of Roxette itself, both members sustained important careers of their own. Gessle continued his involvement with Gyllene Tider and other songwriting projects, while Fredriksson maintained her Swedish solo career. The duo’s later history was also shaped by Fredriksson’s 2002 brain tumor diagnosis, an event that affected the pace of their work but did not end it. Roxette returned to recording and touring after that setback and remained active until Fredriksson’s death on December 9, 2019. Taken as a whole, the group’s story is one of unusual longevity, 10 studio albums, a run of massive international hits, and a songwriting catalog that kept its emotional pull whether the song was a radio ready pop single or a sweeping power ballad.
