Devon Allman, Duane Betts, and Berry Duane Oakley founded The Allman Betts Band in November 2018, bringing together a group rooted in southern rock tradition. Devon Allman is the son of Gregg Allman, Duane Betts is the son of Dickey Betts, and Berry Duane Oakley is the son of Berry Oakley, all founding members of the Allman Brothers Band. The band also features slide guitarist Johnny Stachela, keyboardist and percussionist John Ginty, bassist Justin Corgan, and drummer R. Scott Bryan.
The Allman Betts Band made their live debut at The Fillmore in San Francisco on December 8, 2018, performing classic Allman Brothers Band material as well as original songs. Their performances received widespread attention, both for the lineup’s heritage and their musicianship. Early in 2019, the band began working on their first studio album at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama, a location renowned for its role in southern rock and soul history.
On June 28, 2019, The Allman Betts Band released their debut album, Down to the River. The album was produced by Matt Ross-Spang and featured contributions from veteran musicians like Peter Levin and Marc Quinones. Down to the River included tracks such as “Shinin’,” “All Night,” and the title track, blending blues, rock, and Americana. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard Blues Albums chart and received positive reviews for its songwriting and musicianship.
The band spent much of 2019 touring internationally, appearing at major festivals and venues in the United States and Europe. They were featured at events such as the Peach Music Festival and Ramblin’ Man Fair, where they performed both their own material and classic Allman Brothers Band songs, often joined onstage by other notable musicians from the southern rock scene.
Their second studio album, Bless Your Heart, was released on August 28, 2020. The album, also recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, again featured Matt Ross-Spang as producer. Bless Your Heart included tracks such as “Magnolia Road,” “Pale Horse Rider,” and “Savannah’s Dream,” the latter being a twelve-minute instrumental tribute to the Allman Brothers Band’s musical legacy. The album reached number seventy on the US Billboard 200, number one on the Billboard Blues Albums chart, and number four on the Billboard Top Americana/Folk Albums chart.
Bless Your Heart received critical acclaim and expanded the band’s musical palette, drawing on blues, soul, country, and southern rock influences. The band’s touring in support of the album included headline shows, festival dates, and collaborations with artists such as Samantha Fish and Jimmy Hall. The Allman Betts Band was recognized at the 2021 Blues Music Awards, receiving a nomination for Blues Rock Album of the Year.
The band’s members have appeared in various media interviews and features, discussing the influence of their family histories and the experience of carrying forward the Allman Brothers Band tradition while developing their own sound. Devon Allman, Duane Betts, and Berry Duane Oakley have been credited as lead songwriters and vocalists on many tracks, with Johnny Stachela contributing slide guitar and John Ginty adding Hammond B-3 organ and piano.
During their tours, The Allman Betts Band played venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Beacon Theatre, and the Ryman Auditorium. The band has been praised for their live performances, which often include extended jams and improvisational sections, reminiscent of their forebears. They have also participated in charitable concerts and events supporting music education and disaster relief.
The Allman Betts Band’s discography consists of two studio albums, Down to the River (2019) and Bless Your Heart (2020), as well as a number of singles and live recordings released digitally. Their singles include “Shinin’,” “All Night,” “Magnolia Road,” and “King Crawler.” The band’s records have been released through BMG and Thirty Tigers.
