UB40 was formed in Birmingham in 1978. The band gained international prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, known for their hit singles like “Red Red Wine,” “Kingston Town,” and “(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You.” Over their extensive career, UB40 has released over 20 studio albums and several compilations. They have also received multiple Grammy nominations and have sold over 70 million records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling music artists. UB40’s name was inspired by a form issued to people claiming unemployment benefit from the UK government’s Department of Employment at the time the band was formed.

The band’s music style uniquely blends reggae, dub, and pop elements, and they are notable for their politically engaged lyrics. UB40’s lineup has undergone significant changes throughout their history, impacting their sound and musical direction. The band has seen the departure and replacement of key members, which led to distinct periods in their musical output and influences. Despite these changes, UB40 has maintained a consistent presence in the music industry, continuing to tour and release new music.

Jimmy Brown

Jimmy Brown has been UB40’s drummer since the band’s inception in 1978. He has played on all of UB40’s major albums, contributing significantly to the band’s rhythmic style, which combines traditional reggae beats with elements of Western pop and dub. Brown’s drumming is integral to the UB40 sound, particularly evident in tracks like “Red Red Wine” and “Rat in Mi Kitchen.” Outside of UB40, Jimmy Brown has occasionally contributed to other musical projects but remains most recognized for his work with UB40.

Robin Campbell

Robin Campbell, co-founder of UB40 and brother to Ali Campbell, has been a constant member of the band. As the lead guitarist and a vocalist, his work has been central to defining the band’s sound. Robin has co-produced many of UB40’s albums, and his voice can be heard on several of their hits. He has also been involved in the production side of music, working on albums for other artists in the reggae genre.

Earl Falconer

Earl Falconer, the bassist of UB40, joined the band in 1979. His bass lines are a foundational element of UB40’s sound, especially noted in songs like “Food for Thought.” Falconer has also engaged in side projects, including production duties for other artists within the reggae and dub genres. His solo work explores deeper roots reggae and dub sounds, distinguishing his personal musical style from that of UB40.

Norman Hassan

Percussionist and vocalist Norman Hassan has been with UB40 since its early days, having joined in 1978. Known for his versatility, Hassan has contributed backing vocals and percussion, enhancing the band’s reggae sound. Outside UB40, Norman has engaged in various musical activities, although his primary focus has remained with the band throughout his career.

Matt Doyle

Matt Doyle joined UB40 as the lead vocalist after the departure of Duncan Campbell in 2021. Doyle was previously part of the reggae band Kioko, known for their energetic performances and modern reggae sound. His addition to UB40 marks a new era for the band, bringing a fresh voice and perspective to their music.

Ali Campbell

Ali Campbell was the lead singer and a guitarist for UB40 from its formation in 1978 until his departure in 2008. Under his lead, the band achieved most of its greatest hits, including international successes. After leaving UB40, Ali pursued a successful solo career, releasing albums that continue to explore reggae music. He also formed a separate group known as UB40 featuring Ali Campbell and Astro, performing classic UB40 songs alongside new material.

Yomi Babayemi

Yomi Babayemi was one of the founding members of UB40 but left the band early in its career. His time with the band was brief, and he did not appear on any of their studio albums. Details about his activities after leaving UB40 are scarce, as he remained largely out of the public musical spotlight.

Jimmy Lynn

Jimmy Lynn’s association with UB40 was during the band’s early stages, and like Babayemi, he did not feature on any major releases and left the group early on.

Brian Travers

Brian Travers was one of the founding members and played saxophone for UB40 until his death in 2021. His saxophone playing was a signature part of UB40’s sound, contributing to hits across their discography. Travers was also involved in the band’s songwriting and arrangements, playing a crucial role in their studio productions.

Mickey Virtue

Mickey Virtue played keyboards for UB40 from the beginning until he left along with Ali Campbell in 2008. His keyboard work featured prominently in the band’s arrangements, adding depth to their music. After leaving UB40, Virtue joined Campbell in his new band, continuing to perform music in a style similar to that of UB40.

Astro

Astro, whose real name is Terence Wilson, was a vocalist and trumpeter for UB40 from 1978 until he joined Ali Campbell’s breakaway group in 2013. Known for his toasting style and energetic stage presence, Astro was a fan favorite. He continued to perform and record with Ali Campbell’s group until his death in 2021.
