UB40 was formed in Birmingham, England, in 1978. The band gained international prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, known for hit singles like “Red Red Wine,” “Kingston Town,” and “(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You.” Over their extensive career, UB40 has released more than 20 studio albums and several compilations. They have received four Grammy nominations and have sold tens of millions of records worldwide, making them one of the world’s best-selling music artists. UB40’s name was inspired by Unemployment Benefit, Form 40, a document issued to people claiming unemployment benefit in the United Kingdom at the time the band was formed.

The band’s musical style uniquely blends reggae, dub, pop, and other influences, and they are notable for their politically engaged lyrics. UB40’s lineup has undergone significant changes throughout its history, impacting the band’s sound and musical direction. Despite those changes, UB40 has maintained a consistent presence in the music industry, continuing to tour and release new music. Their 21st studio album, UB45, was released in 2024 and reached the Top 5 on the UK Albums Chart. The band remains active on the road in 2026 and has announced another album.

Jimmy Brown

Jimmy Brown has been UB40’s drummer since the band’s inception in 1978. A founding member, Brown’s syncopated drumming has been central to the band’s rhythmic style, combining reggae with elements of pop and dub. His playing is integral to the UB40 sound on tracks such as “Red Red Wine” and “Rat in Mi Kitchen.” Brown has also contributed lyrics and remained one of the band’s most outspoken voices on social and political subjects.

Robin Campbell

Robin Campbell, co-founder of UB40 and brother of Ali and Duncan Campbell, has been a constant member of the band. As guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and producer, his work has been central to defining UB40’s sound. Robin performs lead vocals on a number of songs in addition to providing the harmonies that became an important part of the band’s vocal identity. He remains one of the core members leading UB40 through its current recording and touring era.

Earl Falconer

Earl Falconer is a founding member and the longtime bassist of UB40. His bass lines are a foundational element of the band’s sound, especially evident in songs like “Food for Thought.” Falconer also contributes vocals, keyboards, and production ideas. Outside UB40, he has been involved in electronic music and artist development, including work connected with Circus Records.

Norman Hassan

Norman Hassan has been with UB40 since the band’s formation in 1978. A founding member, he contributes percussion and vocals and has also played trombone. Hassan has provided lead vocals on songs including “Johnny Too Bad,” “Soul Rebel,” and “The Road,” while his percussion and backing vocals have remained important elements of the band’s live and studio sound.

Matt Doyle

Matt Doyle became UB40’s lead singer in 2021 following Duncan Campbell’s retirement. Doyle had previously fronted the Birmingham reggae band KIOKO, which toured with UB40, and he appeared on the UB40 track “You Don’t Call Anymore” before taking over the lead-vocal role. His arrival marked a new era for the band, and he became the principal lead singer on UB45 in 2024.

Martin Meredith

Martin Meredith has performed with UB40 since 1997, contributing saxophone, keyboards, and WX7 wind synthesizer. Brian Travers helped inspire Meredith’s development as a saxophonist, and Meredith joined UB40 after being offered an audition while also considering formal composition studies at Birmingham Conservatoire. He has since performed and recorded extensively with the band.

Laurence Parry

Laurence Parry joined UB40’s touring organization in 1994 near the end of the Promises and Lies tour. A multi-instrumental brass player, he performs trumpet, flugelhorn, and trombone and also contributes backing vocals. Parry has remained part of UB40’s brass section for decades, appearing on tours and recordings through the current era.

Ian Thompson

Ian Thompson joined UB40’s touring lineup in 2019 when he was asked to fill in for saxophonist and founding member Brian Travers during Travers’ illness. After Travers died in 2021, Thompson continued as part of the band’s brass section. He performs saxophone, keyboards, and percussion.

Jahred Gordon

Jahred Gordon, whose name is Rajive Gordon, began performing with UB40 in 2023. The Jamaican multi-instrumentalist contributes keyboards, guitar, bass, and saxophone. His versatility has made him an important part of UB40’s expanded current-stage lineup.

Gilly G

Gilly G is described by UB40 as the band’s “permanent guest.” A longtime friend of the group and former schoolmate of Norman Hassan, he contributes MC work and vocals. Gilly first appeared with UB40 during the For the Many era and has since become a regular presence in the band’s live performances.

Matt Campbell

Matt Campbell, the son of Robin Campbell, contributes backing vocals while also serving in a management role for UB40. He spent years working behind the scenes with the group before becoming part of the onstage lineup. Campbell has also helped shape collaborations associated with later UB40 projects.

Past Members

Ali Campbell

Ali Campbell was a founding member, lead singer, and guitarist for UB40 from 1978 until his departure in 2008. Under his lead vocals, the band achieved many of its greatest international hits. Campbell left amid disagreements concerning the band’s business and management while also pursuing his solo career. He later performed with former UB40 members Astro and Mickey Virtue and has continued touring under the name UB40 Featuring Ali Campbell.

Yomi Babayemi

Yomi Babayemi was one of UB40’s original founding members and played percussion during the band’s earliest period in 1978 and 1979. He was part of the first lineup that performed at the Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath in February 1979. Babayemi left before UB40 began its recording career and did not appear on the band’s studio albums.

Jimmy Lynn

Jimmy Lynn was UB40’s original keyboard player during the band’s formation in 1978 and early 1979. Like Yomi Babayemi, Lynn appeared with the first live lineup but left before the group began recording its major releases. Mickey Virtue subsequently took over the keyboard position.

Brian Travers

Brian Travers was a founding member and the saxophonist whose horn playing became one of UB40’s most recognizable musical signatures. Travers was also a prolific lyricist and contributed heavily to the band’s arrangements and visual ideas. He remained with UB40 through his illness and died on August 22, 2021, following a three-year battle with cancer.

Mickey Virtue

Mickey Virtue joined UB40 on keyboards in 1979 after original keyboardist Jimmy Lynn left. Virtue became part of the classic lineup and remained with the band until 2008. His keyboard work featured prominently in UB40’s arrangements throughout the group’s most commercially successful years. After leaving, Virtue joined Ali Campbell’s musical organization and later performed alongside Campbell and Astro.

Astro

Astro, whose real name was Terence Wilson, joined UB40 in 1979 as a toaster, vocalist, percussionist, and trumpeter. Known for his reggae toasting style and energetic stage presence, Astro became one of the band’s most recognizable personalities. He left UB40 in 2013 and subsequently performed with Ali Campbell and Mickey Virtue. Astro continued performing and recording with Campbell’s group until his death on November 6, 2021.

Duncan Campbell

Duncan Campbell joined UB40 as lead vocalist in 2008 after the departure of his brother Ali Campbell. He contributed to the band’s post-Ali era, including TwentyFourSeven, Labour of Love IV, Getting Over the Storm, and For the Many. Duncan retired from UB40 in 2021 to concentrate on his recovery after suffering a stroke followed by a seizure. Matt Doyle succeeded him as lead singer.

Tony Mullings

Tony Mullings joined UB40’s extended lineup on keyboards following the 2008 departures of Ali Campbell and Mickey Virtue. He initially worked as a touring and session musician and later became a regular member of the performing lineup. Mullings remained associated with UB40 through 2023, when the current keyboard and multi-instrumental lineup evolved further.

Henry Tenyue

Henry Tenyue performed trombone with UB40’s touring horn section from 1983 through 1994. His brass work supported the band’s concerts during some of its most commercially successful years.

Patrick Tenyue

Patrick Tenyue performed trumpet with UB40’s touring horn section from 1983 through 1994, working alongside Henry Tenyue and the band’s core instrumentalists during the classic 1980s and early 1990s period.
