Phish was formed in 1983 at the University of Vermont in Burlington. The band consists of founding members Trey Anastasio on guitar and lead vocals, Mike Gordon on bass and vocals, and Jon Fishman on drums and vocals, along with Page McConnell on keyboards and vocals, who joined in 1985. Trey Anastasio
Trey Anastasio, born Ernest Joseph Anastasio III, is a founding member of Phish, serving as the lead guitarist and primary vocalist since the band’s inception in 1983 at the University of Vermont. Anastasio is a prolific songwriter and is responsible for crafting much of Phish’s extensive catalog. His distinctive guitar playing, characterized by intricate improvisations and a versatile use of effects, has defined much of Phish’s sound. Mike Gordon
Mike Gordon, co-founder and bassist of Phish, has been instrumental in shaping the band’s sound since its inception in 1983. Known for his complex and melodic bass lines, Gordon’s playing is integral to Phish’s distinctive blend of rock, jazz, and funk. His technical prowess and improvisational skills have contributed significantly to Phish’s reputation as a premier live act. Gordon has played on all 16 of Phish’s studio albums, from the debut, Junta, through releases such as Rift (1993), Billy Breathes (1996), Sigma Oasis (2020), and Evolve (2024).

Jon Fishman
Jon Fishman, a founding member of Phish, has been the band’s drummer since its formation in 1983 at the University of Vermont. Renowned for his distinctive drumming style, which incorporates a vast array of influences from jazz to rock to funk, Fishman’s rhythmic foundation is a crucial element of Phish’s sound. His energetic and intricate drumming has helped define the band’s dynamic improvisational style. His keyboard work on live favorites such as “You Enjoy Myself” and “The Squirming Coil” showcases his vital role in the band’s eclectic compositions. His playing remains a cornerstone of both Phish’s studio recordings and the expansive live improvisations for which the group is renowned.
Outside of Phish, Page McConnell has pursued various musical projects that highlight his versatility. He released the solo album Page McConnell in 2007, showcasing his skills as a songwriter and pianist. He also formed the group Vida Blue, which blends elements of electronica with jazz and funk, further demonstrating his ability to merge different musical styles. McConnell’s work embodies a deep passion for exploration and innovation across every project he undertakes.
Jeff Holdsworth
Jeff Holdsworth was one of the co-founders of Phish, playing guitar and contributing vocals. He was instrumental in the band’s formation while attending the University of Vermont with Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon. Holdsworth was part of the original lineup that began playing together in 1983, and his guitar work helped shape the early sound of Phish. During his time with the band, he introduced material that remained part of the group’s repertoire long after his departure.
Holdsworth appeared on the band’s early recordings and remained a member after Page McConnell joined in 1985, briefly making Phish a five-piece group. He left the band in 1986. After leaving Phish, Holdsworth stepped away from the spotlight and largely ceased performing publicly, focusing instead on personal interests and a career outside music. Although his tenure was limited to the band’s formative years, his contributions were important in establishing the foundation from which Phish developed. His early influence continues to be acknowledged by the band and its longtime fans.
