Phish was formed in 1983 at the University of Vermont in Burlington. The band consists of founding members Trey Anastasio (guitars, lead vocals), Mike Gordon (bass, vocals), Jon Fishman (drums, vocals), and Page McConnell (keyboards, vocals), who joined in 1985. Phish is noted for its dedicated fan base and has cultivated a distinct subculture through its live performances, which often feature intricate light shows and a variety of setlists. The band released their debut studio album, Junta, in 1989 and has since released a total of 15 studio albums, including notable works like Rift (1993), Billy Breathes (1996), and A Picture of Nectar (1992). They are also renowned for their live albums, which capture the essence of their performances. Phish took a hiatus from 2000 to 2002 and then disbanded in 2004, only to reunite in 2009, continuing to tour and record music since.

Trey Anastasio

Trey Anastasio, born Ernest Joseph Anastasio III, is a founding member of Phish, serving as the lead guitarist and primary vocalist since the band’s inception in 1983 at the University of Vermont. Anastasio is a prolific songwriter and is responsible for crafting much of Phish’s extensive catalog. His distinctive guitar playing, characterized by intricate improvisations and a versatile use of effects, has defined much of Phish’s sound. Over the decades, his leadership and creative vision have been central to the band’s enduring success and evolution.

Anastasio has played on all of Phish’s studio albums, from their debut Junta in 1989 to their most recent work, contributing not only guitar and vocals but also a variety of other instruments when needed. His role extends beyond performance; he is actively involved in the arrangement and production aspects of Phish’s music. Apart from his work with Phish, Anastasio has an extensive solo career, with projects that include the Trey Anastasio Band. He has also collaborated with a wide array of musicians in various genres, ranging from classical orchestras to jazz ensembles.

Beyond his musical output, Anastasio has engaged in several initiatives for music education and addiction recovery, reflecting his personal experiences and growth. His contributions to music have been recognized with several awards and nominations, underscoring his impact on contemporary rock and improvisational music.

Mike Gordon

Mike Gordon, co-founder and bassist of Phish, has been instrumental in shaping the band’s sound since its inception in 1983. Known for his complex and melodic bass lines, Gordon’s playing is integral to Phish’s distinctive blend of rock, jazz, and funk. His technical prowess and improvisational skills have contributed significantly to Phish’s reputation as a premier live act. Gordon has played on all of Phish’s studio albums, from their debut Junta in 1989, through seminal releases such as Rift (1993), Billy Breathes (1996), and up to their most recent work, Sigma Oasis (2020).

In addition to his substantial output with Phish, Mike Gordon has also carved out a notable solo career. He has released several solo albums that explore a variety of genres, showcasing his breadth as a musician. Albums like Inside In (2003) and OGOGO (2017) offer a mix of funk, rock, and experimental music, further demonstrating his versatility.

Gordon’s collaborations extend beyond his solo work. His notable musical partnership with guitarist Leo Kottke has produced several acclaimed albums, where the duo’s chemistry and interplay shine through. Their work together includes albums like Clone and Sixty Six Steps, which blend Americana with subtle progressive elements. Gordon has also participated in live performances with The Benevento/Russo Duo and contributed to folk legend Ramblin’ Jack Elliott’s album I Stand Alone.

Jon Fishman

Jon Fishman, a founding member of Phish, has been the band’s drummer since its formation in 1983 at the University of Vermont. Renowned for his distinctive drumming style, which incorporates a vast array of influences from jazz to rock to funk, Fishman’s rhythmical foundation is a crucial element of Phish’s sound. His energetic and intricate drumming has helped define the band’s dynamic improvisational style. Fishman is also known for his vocal contributions to the band, often adding a unique and humorous touch to their performances.

Fishman has played on all of Phish’s studio albums, contributing not only his drumming skills but also his voice and occasionally other instruments. From the band’s debut album Junta to their most recent, Sigma Oasis, his presence has been a constant and vital component of their music. His versatility is showcased across a variety of Phish’s tracks, perhaps most notably in live performances, where his ability to drive both rhythmic complexity and cohesion comes to the fore.

Outside of Phish, Jon Fishman has engaged in several musical projects that showcase his wide-ranging musical interests. He has performed with Jazz Mandolin Project and participated in a Grateful Dead tribute band called Jazz Is Dead, reflecting his deep appreciation and understanding of jazz and improvisational music. Fishman is also politically active; he’s been involved in local government and has used his platform to advocate for various social and environmental causes.

Through his work with Phish and other musical endeavors, Jon Fishman has proven himself to be not only a talented drummer and musician but also a committed and conscientious member of the broader community. His ongoing contributions continue to influence the music world and inspire a new generation of musicians and fans alike.

Page McConnell

Page McConnell has been an integral member of Phish since he joined the band in 1985, solidifying the lineup that would lead to their eventual rise as one of the most innovative jam bands in music history. As the keyboardist, McConnell brings a rich layer of sonic texture to the band’s music, utilizing a wide array of keyboard instruments including pianos, organs, and synthesizers. His ability to blend classical piano styles with funky organ riffs and experimental synth landscapes has significantly shaped Phish’s sound. McConnell’s contributions go beyond just instrumentation; he also provides vocals and has penned several of the band’s songs.

Throughout his tenure with Phish, McConnell has played on all their major studio albums from Lawn Boy (1990) onward, including fan favorites like Rift (1993), Billy Breathes (1996), and the more recent Sigma Oasis (2020). His solo in the live performance favorite “You Enjoy Myself” and his harmonies in “The Squirming Coil” showcase his vital role in the band’s eclectic music compositions. Notably, his keyboard work is a cornerstone in both the studio and the expansive live improvisations that Phish is renowned for.

Outside of Phish, Page McConnell has pursued various musical projects that highlight his versatility as a musician. He released a solo album, Page McConnell in 2007, which features his skills as a songwriter and pianist. He also formed the supergroup Vida Blue, which blends elements of electronica with jazz and funk, further demonstrating his prowess in merging different musical styles. McConnell’s contributions to music extend beyond his keyboard skills, embodying a deep passion for exploration and innovation in every project he undertakes.

Jeff Holdsworth

Jeff Holdsworth was one of the co-founders of Phish, playing guitar and contributing vocals. He was instrumental in the band’s formation while attending the University of Vermont with Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon. Holdsworth was part of the original lineup that started playing together in 1983, and his guitar playing helped shape the early sound of Phish. During his time with the band, he was responsible for introducing some of the band’s early repertoire, including fan favorites that would stay with Phish throughout their career.

Holdsworth played on the band’s early recordings but left the group in 1986, shortly before Page McConnell joined and solidified the most well-known lineup. After leaving Phish, Holdsworth stepped away from the spotlight and largely ceased performing publicly, focusing instead on personal interests and a career outside of music. His contributions to Phish, while limited to the band’s formative years, were crucial in setting the stage for what the band would eventually become. His early influence is still acknowledged by the band and longtime fans.
