Top 10 Henry Paul Band Songs

Henry Paul Band Songs

Our Top 10 Henry Paul Band songs list looks at the music of a band first formed in 1979. If you were or are a fan of the Outlaws, then you probably are family with the musician Henry Paul. While Henry Paul was not an original member of The Outlaws, he did join the band early on in 1972 and was an essential member during the band’s glory years in the 1970s. He left the band in 1977 but returned to the Outlaws in the 1980s. In between those years, he formed the Henry Paul Band. The group released three albums together, starting with Grey Ghost in 1979, which was followed up by Feel the Heat in 1980. The band’s third and final album was released in 1981 called Anytime. Henry Paul released a solo album in 1982 called Henry Paul.

TOP 10 HENRY PAUL BAND SONGS

# 10 – I Don’t Need You No More

We open up our Top 10 Henry Paul Band Songs list with the smoking track ” I Dont Need You No More.” Yes, baby, the South is going to do it again with this memorable classic by the Henry Paul Band. The song was released on the band’s debut album. The first album remains by far their best as the group sticks with their southern rock roots on the entire album. They would often experiment after their debut with mixed reactions from fans, but there is no denying the strength of their debut album and songs like this.

# 9 – Living Without Your Love

Continuing with our Top 10 Henry Paul Band Songs list, we listen to this cheery, energetic, interesting song, “Living Without Your Love.” This sound presents a battle between heavy-duty synth sound-driven lines and southern rock guitar riffs. This is the sound of the Henry Paul Band past their debut album. This group straddled many lines of pop and rock.

# 8 – Longshot

I always really liked this song. As you will often see on this list, the Henry Paul Band was known for blending a wide variety of styles, especially on their second and third albums. Music was changing at the turn of the decade, and Southern Rock was in a bit of trouble. There was an attempt to merge the styles of Southern rock with more of a radio-friendly pop sensibility. It’s easy to hear that urgency in songs like this. It’s not a complete surrender. You can still feel the grit in the guitar’s sound.

# 7 – Lonely Dreamer

In the number seven position on our Top 10 Henry Paul Band Songs list is a real swinging fun one called “Lonely Dreamer.” This is the sound of Southern Rock 1970s style. There is a nice blend of the Charlie Daniels Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, and course, The Outlaws all playing out in this rockin’ song. The song was released on the album Grey Ghost.

# 6 – Crossfire

We love the groove on this one. It reminds us a little of the band Firefall. The song “Crossfire” was released on the Henry Paul Band’s debut album. The song was never released as a single. Yet it’s just such a cool song. We love the harmonies in the chorus. A great guitar solo rings passionately at about a minute thirty five. The Fender Rhodes piano sound matches up perfectly against those guitar riffs. It’s just so late 70s’ sounding.

# 5 – Hold On

At the halfway point on our Top 10 Henry Paul Band Songs list is the song entitled “Hold One.” This one is credited just to Henry Paul. We thought it was important to represent this album because it’s so different from the Henry Paul Band albums. Gone is the Southern rock sound replaced with a modern pop rock synth-heavy sound that had become extremely popular in the early 1980s at the dawn of the MTV era. Henry Paul went back to his Southern Rock sound in everything he did after this album was released. This really wasn’t him in style, but it was an interesting listen and part of the historic record.

# 4 – Keeping Our Love Alive

Southern rock music went through a lot of changes at the end of the decade from 1979 to about 1982. The genre exploded with a blend of Southern rock roots and pop music. Bands like 38 Special were widely successful with this format.  The Henry Paul band also flirted with this mix, resulting in a pretty big hit in the song “Keeping Our Love Alive.” The song Hit number 50 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

# 3 – So Long

This is such a beautiful song. It opens with a guitar strum similar to Led Zeppelins’ “Babe, I’m Going To Leave You.” There is a bit of a “Hurry Sundown,” feel to this one, too. Even though the song starts out as a ballad, at the one-minute mark, it transforms into a real bar burner. This is a terrific song and one of the band’s best. It was released on the Henry Paul Band’s debut album released in 1977.

# 2 – Whiskey Talkin’

At the number two spot on our Top 10 Henry Paul Band Songs list, we present the song entitled Whiskey Talkin’. This is such a phenomenal song. You can hear the influences of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ted Nugent, The Allman Brothers Band, and Foghat on this one. The guitar playing sounds like Rod Price. The song was released on the band’s second album entitled Feel The Heat. The album was released in 1980.

# 1 – Grey Ghost

We close out our Top 10 Henry Paul Band Songs list with the band’s best song entitled
“Grey Ghost.” The song was written in memory of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Ronnie Van Zant, who had died in the 1977 plane crash that also killed several other members of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd, including guitarist Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray. It was a horrible tragedy that affected millions of fans and, of course, all the family members who lost loved ones.

I was 16 at the time, and I will never forget how devastated I was when I heard the news. I had just seen Lynyrd Skynyrd in concert with Ted Nugent only a few months earlier.  The song “Grey Ghost,” was the title track to the band’s debut album. The song opens with killer guitar work, a pumping piano, and a driving hard rhythm section. It’s a heartfelt song.
