Our Top 10 Rufus Songs list will look at legendary funk band from the 70s. Rufus was one of the most influential funk bands of the 70s. Four of their albums reached number one on the r&b charts. The band has 10 pop hits and five number one r&b singles. They have won two Grammys for the singles “Tell Me Something Good” and “Ain’t Nobody.” Rufus sold over 3 million albums worldwide. Some of their hits include “Tell Me Something Good,” “Ain’t Nobody,” “Sweet Thing,” “You Got the Love,” “Do You Love What You Feel,” “Once You Get Started,” “Everlasting Love” as well as others.
All that glittered wasn’t gold with Rufus. Like most bands, Rufus had tension and member changes. Singer Chaka Khan was emerging as the star of the band. Her stardom led to tension with the band. After the release of their third album, they became Rufus featuring Chaka Khan. It started to take a toll on the rest of the band. Chaka Khan and drummer Andre Fischer butted heads. Her husband at the time was also part of the problem between Chaka Khan and Andre Fischer. Andre Fischer would eventually leave the band. Keyboardist Nate Morgan left after Andre Fischer.
Things took a turn for the worse when Chaka Khan decided to pursue a solo career. She released her solo album in 1978 which was a bigger success than Rufus’ Street Player album. Chaka Khan stayed with the band even though she was recording solo albums. The tension among the band got so bad that she avoided them all together. She recorded her vocals alone. The tension didn’t help because their albums weren’t selling the way they were in the past. In 1983, Rufus decided to break up. In 2001, the band reunited for a tour. They toured again in 2008.
Rufus was released in July 1973. The album peaked at number 44 on the r&b charts and number 175 on Billboard 200. It features the singles “Keep It Coming,” “Maybe Your Baby,” “I Finally Found You” and “Feel Good.” Rags to Riches was released in May 1974. The album peaked at number four on the r&b charts and Billboard 200. It features the singles “You Got the Love,” “Tell Me Something Good,” “Swing Down Chariot” and “Look Through My Eyes.” The album went gold. Rufusized was released in December 1974. The album peaked at number two on the r&b charts and number seven on Billboard 200. It features the singles “Once You Get Started,” “Please Pardon Me (You Remind Me of a Friend),” “Somebody’s Watching You” and “Your Smile.” The album went gold.
Rufus featuring Chaka Khan was released in November 1975. The album peaked at number one on the r&b charts and number seven on Billboard 200. It features the singles “Sweet Thing,” “Dance Wit Me” and “Jive Talkin’.” Ask Rufus was released in January 1977. The album peaked at number one on the r&b charts and number 12 on Billboard 200. It features the singles “At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up),” “Hollywood,” “Everlasting Love” and “Close the Door.” The album went platinum. Street Player was released in January 1978. The album peaked at number one on the r&b charts and number 14 on Billboard 200. It features the singles “Stay,” “Blue Love,” “Turn” and “Best of Your Heart.” The album went gold. Numbers was released in January 1979. The album peaked at number 15 on the r&b charts and number 81 on Billboard 200. It features the singles “Ain’t Nobody Like You,” “You’re to Blame,” ‘Don’t You Sit Alone” and “Bet My Dreams.” Rufus recorded this album without Chaka Khan. She was recording her own album at the time.
Masterjam was released in November 1979. Chaka Khan was back with this album. The album peaked at number one on the r&b charts and number 14 on Billboard 200. It features the singles “Do You Love What You Feel,” “Any Love” and “I’m Dancing for Your Love.” Party ‘Til You’re Broke was released in March 1981. This is the second album they recorded without Chaka Khan. The album peaked at number 24 on the r&b charts and number 73 on Billboard 200. The album peaked at number 15 on the r&b charts and number 98 on Billboard 200. When she saw him, she knew she had found it. He fills her heart with bliss. Being with him gave her freedom. She couldn’t resist being with him because she needed to be with somebody. She wishes on a star and hopes the night will last forever. The narrator can’t resist him. She enjoys spending her nights with him. The love she has for him is so deep she can’t measure.
This is a song that celebrates love. They love each other so much and accept everything about each other. This song will make you a believer in love. It is a well written song about love making you feel alive and happy with yourself. If you are a fan of Rufus, you will recognize this song immediately. This is Rufus’ last charted single before Chaka Khan left the group. They went out with a bang because this song is fire. The music is melodic and great for dancing. This song was used in the movie Breakin’. This song will appeal to people of all generations. If you are a fan of dance music, you can’t go wrong with this song. You would never know the band was having tension because they work so well together.
Here is some trivia about the song. Quincy Jones wanted the song for Michael Jackson’s Thriller album. Keyboardist David Wolinski wanted this song to be the lead single. If they didn’t make it the lead single, he was going to give the song to Michael Jackson. Luckily the band changed their mind because this song was made for them. Chaka Khan’s vocals are spectacular. This song is about a woman who is with a man who is empty inside. She is convinced that she can make him feel again. He refuses to put anything before his pride. She believes she can knock his pride aside. She believes she can set his heart on fire. Our narrator is determined to make him feel something real. She wants him to open up to her. She wants him to tell her something good. She believes it will bring them closer together. She wants him to connect with her on a deeper level. She knows he hasn’t been loved the way he should have been in the past. She understands why he is distant. The narrator wants to change that for him. Her love will be enough to make the ice melt around his heart.
“Tell Me Something Good” tells a story about a woman who wants to get her man to open up to her. She wants him to forget about his pride and be with her. She believes she can change his life.
