Our Top 10 Slade songs looks at a band that was huge in the United Kingdom but was paid little attention to by rock and roll fans in the United States. Most of the attention the band received in the United States was a result of the success Quiet Riot had covering Slade Songs. Nonetheless, it can be easily argued that Slade stands as one of the pioneering bands of glam rock. The band has an incredibly impressive catalog of great songs and albums that proved to be very successful around the world except for in the United States.

Slade’s debut album was released in 1969. The album was entitled Beginnings. At that point in time the band was utilizing the name Ambrose Slade. Their debut album consisted of many cover songs including material written by Frank Zappa, The Moody Blues and The Beatles.

The band changed their name for their second record released in 1970 entitled Play It Loud. After the release of the second record, Slade began to have success with single only releases. Singles such as “Get Down and Get With It,” and “Coz I Luv You, ” brought the band great success in the United Kingdom. The band would release a live album called Slade Alive! in 1972. The live album was a mix of original songs and covers including a smoking version of Steppenwolf’s “Born To Be Wild.”

After the release of the live album Slade released what would be the most successful album of their career. In 1972, the band released the album Slayed. On the record was their smash hit “Mama Weer All Crazee Now.”

Slade continued to release albums through the 1979s and 1980s. Their last studio album entitled You Boyz Make Big Noize was released in 1987. The band stayed together for a few years after that. However, the original Slade formally broke up in the early 1990s. There was an album released in 1992 entitled Keep On Rockin! that did not feature Noddy Holder and Jim Lea. Most fans ignored that record because it was missing half of the original four members of the band.

# 10 – Mad Dog Cole

We start out our top 10 Slade songs list with a track from their debut album in 1969. The song “Mad Dog Cole,” was one of the few original songs released on the album. This cool semi- instrumental song was the album’s opening track on the record’s second side.

# 9 – Gudbuy T’Jane

The great Slade song “Gudbuy T’Jane” was released on the band’s iconic album Slayed in 1972. The songs “Gudbuy T’Jane” was released as the second single from the LP.

 

# 8 – Merry Xmas Everybody

It’s rare that a Christmas song can become one of the band’s biggest hits. However Slade’s “Merry Xmas Everybody,” turned out to be one of the most popular songs the band ever released. The song was released in 1973 as a non-album single.

The song “Coz I Luv You,” was Slade’s first number single in the United Kingdom. Following in the footsteps of bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, the song “Coz I Luv You”  was a non-album single released between albums.

“Far Far Away,” was released on the band’s fifth album entitled Slade In Flames. The album was released in 1974. The single “Far Far Away,” was another commercial success for the band as it reached all the way to number 2 on the United Kingdom pop charts.

In the United States, most rock fans first heard this song in the 1980s when Quiet Riot had one of the hits of their career with it. However, in the United Kingdom and most of the rest of the world, this song belongs to Slade.

The great track “Skweeze Me Pleeze Me,” has always been one of our favorite Slade songs. The song was another Slade non-album single release. In 1973, the song  “Skweeze Me Pleeze Me,” hit number one on the United Kingdom pop charts.

Everyone knows this one. The song was released in 1973. Once again, it was a non-album single release. Once again, for the fourth time in a row, Slade had a number one record in the United Kingdom. It’s incredible that Slade never achieved the same success in the United States that they had in the United Kingdom with all their number one singles.

This has to be one of the greatest sing along songs ever released. The great song “My Oh My,” was from the album The Amazing Kamikaze Syndrome. One of those songs that you probably never heard that will blow you away wondering how you never discovered such great music.
