The 2000s produced plenty of songs about grief, loneliness, regret, heartbreak, and mortality. These ten recordings come from very different corners of rock and pop, but each one carries a kind of sadness that is hard to shake.

# 10 – Hurt – Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash recorded Trent Reznor’s “Hurt” for American IV: The Man Comes Around, the final album released during Cash’s lifetime in 2002. Produced by Rick Rubin, the recording strips the Nine Inch Nails song down around Cash’s aging voice, turning it into a reflection on regret, mortality, and everything that eventually disappears. Mark Romanek’s accompanying video made that feeling even harder to separate from Cash’s own life.

# 9 – Sloe Gin – Joe Bonamassa

Joe Bonamassa made “Sloe Gin” the title track of his 2007 album, produced by Kevin Shirley. Written by Bob Ezrin and Michael Kamen and first recorded by Tim Curry, the song centers on loneliness, emotional exhaustion, and the unsuccessful attempt to numb the pain. Bonamassa’s slow arrangement gives both his vocal and guitar plenty of room to carry that sense of isolation.

# 8 – My Immortal – Evanescence

“My Immortal” appeared on Evanescence’s 2003 debut album, Fallen, and was released as a single later that year. Written by Amy Lee, Ben Moody, and David Hodges, the song centers on the lingering emotional presence of someone who is gone but still impossible to escape. The single reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the band’s signature recordings.

# 7 – Alice – Tom Waits

Tom Waits released “Alice” in 2002 as the title track of the album he created with Kathleen Brennan from songs originally written for a 1992 stage production with Robert Wilson. Built around the world of Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell, the song mixes longing, obsession, distance, and death in the surreal way Waits does so well. The sparse chamber arrangement makes the sadness feel even more isolated.

# 6 – Love Is a Losing Game – Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse recorded “Love Is a Losing Game” for her 2006 album Back to Black, with Mark Ronson producing. Released as the album’s final single in 2007, the song treats love as something already lost before the game is even over. Its restrained arrangement leaves Winehouse’s resignation at the center, and the song won the 2008 Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically.

# 5 – Sullen Soul – Maria McKee

“Sullen Soul” appears on Maria McKee’s 2005 album Peddlin’ Dreams. Written by Jim Akin, the song captures the push and pull between wanting companionship and wanting to disappear into solitude. McKee and Akin recorded the album largely in their home studio, and the rougher, intimate production suits a song built around loneliness and emotional withdrawal.

# 4 – In This River – Black Label Society

Zakk Wylde wrote and produced “In This River” for Black Label Society’s 2005 album Mafia. The song was written before the murder of Wylde’s close friend Dimebag Darrell, but afterward Wylde permanently dedicated it to him and has continued to treat it as Dimebag’s song in concert. It reached No. 32 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart.

# 3 – Ballad of the Boy in the Red Shoes – Elton John

“Ballad of the Boy in the Red Shoes” appears on Elton John’s 2001 album Songs from the West Coast. Elton John wrote the music, Bernie Taupin supplied the lyrics, and Patrick Leonard produced the recording. The song tells the story of a man dying of AIDS while looking back at the years when the disease was ignored and misunderstood, giving the track a sadness rooted in both personal loss and a larger historical failure.

# 2 – You’re Missing – Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen wrote “You’re Missing” in the aftermath of September 11 and released it on The Rising in 2002. Produced by Brendan O’Brien, the song focuses on the ordinary objects and routines that remain when someone is suddenly gone. That contrast between a house that looks normal and the person who is no longer there gives the song its emotional force.

# 1 – Keep Me in Your Heart – Warren Zevon

Warren Zevon and Jorge Calderón wrote “Keep Me in Your Heart” for Zevon’s final studio album, The Wind, released in August 2003 after Zevon had been diagnosed with terminal pleural mesothelioma. The song does not fight death so much as ask the people left behind to remember him during ordinary moments. Zevon died less than two weeks after the album was released, which makes the quiet farewell even harder to hear.
