As someone who has worked in the classroom for many years, if there were ever one thing I wanted to teach students, it was the idea of respect. I’m not talking about respect for me as a teacher or for all adults, which of course I did teach, but respect for their peers and respect for themselves. To me, that was the most important lesson I could try to teach students every day. Younger people need adult role models. Adults who act like adults. There are too many in the world right now that don’t do that. So here’s a list of songs with the word “respect” in the title.
# 10 – Respectable – The Rolling Stones
What better band to open up a rock and roll list than the Rolling Stones, one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. Everyone loves Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street in the 1970s, but for me, my favorite Stones album of the 70s was Some Girls.
# 9 – Respect – Life Of Agony
Well, why not add something a little heavier to this list? Life Of Agony’s “Respect” fits the bill perfectly for this one on the metal side. This was originally released in 1993.
# 8 – A Little Respect – Erasure
You just can’t get this melody out of your head the first time you hear it. Both the verse and the chorus are just so iconic. One of the all-time greats from Erasure. The song was released in 1988 on the album The Innocents.
# 7 – Give The Lady Some Respect
This track was released on Sweet’s 1980 album Waters Edge. It featured Andy Scott on bass and vocals.
# 6 – Respect Me in the Morning
Nothing like a little southern rock to add to this list. Who better than the legendary Molly Hatchet to provide it? This one was released on the Take No Prisoners album. The LP was released in 1981.
# 5 – I’m Gonna Give You Respect – Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye’s “I’m Gonna Give You Respect” was originally recorded in 1968 but was not released on any official album except for compilations, which is pretty striking because it is such a sensational track and defines the amount of brilliant material Marvin Gaye released during his lifetime.
# 4 – Respect Yourself’—The Staple Singers
Yes, I know many of you will always remember the Bruce Willis version, which was pretty entertaining, but come on, the standard to hold everyone to will always be the killer recording by the Staple Sisters.
# 3 – Show Some Respect – Tina Turner
Tina Turner’s “Show Some Respect ” was released on her award-winning 1984 album Private Dancer. This album was a huge comeback for Tina Turner and fueled a career resurgence that lasted for the rest of our life.
# 2 – A Well Respected Man – The Kinks
As we close in on the number one song on this list, we turn to one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time, we all know and love as the Kinks. The song was originally released in 1965 on the UK EP Kwyet Kinks. The song would also become a top 20 hit in the United States, peaking at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.
# 1 – Respect – Aretha Franklin
We had to end it with this one. Originally written by Otis Redding, who also recorded and released the song, there is no denying that Aretha’s version became a classic. It hit number one in 1968 and won multiple Grammy Awards.
