Rumson, New Jersey, shaped Charlie Puth into a musician who treated songwriting and production as the same job from the start. He studied piano as a child after his mother introduced him to classical music and began teaching him at age four, then moved into jazz studies at age ten. By age twelve, he was part of a summer youth jazz ensemble affiliated with Count Basie Theatre’s Cool School in Red Bank, New Jersey, and was hired by the Count Basie Theatre to play in a Charlie Brown production. In sixth grade, he went door to door selling a Christmas album he recorded and produced, Have a Very Charlie Christmas, and he reported making six hundred dollars in sales. He later attended the Manhattan School of Music Precollege as a jazz piano major with a classical studies minor, graduated from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in 2010, and earned a 2013 degree from Berklee College of Music in music production and engineering.

At seventeen, Puth began building a public audience through YouTube, launching his channel in September 2009 and posting comedy videos and acoustic covers while also writing theme songs and jingles for other creators. He released the music video for his first song, “These Are My Sexy Shades,” in 2010, then issued his debut EP, The Otto Tunes, in December 2010. In 2011, he won Perez Hilton’s online video competition “Can You Sing?”, performing Adele’s “Someone Like You” with Emily Luther, a performance that led Ellen DeGeneres to sign them to her label, eleveneleven. During this period, he performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and released the promotional single “Break Again” with Luther. He performed at an event supporting DKMS Delete Blood Cancer in October 2012, and later that year he left eleveneleven and released a second independent EP, Ego.

His early work also showed a clear path into professional songwriting and production, even before his major-label breakout. He wrote the theme song for Shane Dawson’s Shane and Friends podcast and related skits, created the intro jingle for the SHAYTARDS family vlogs, wrote the original theme song for Charles Trippy’s Internet Killed Television vlog, and contributed music connected to the touring and film work of the YouTube group Our 2nd Life, including singles for member Ricky Dillon. In 2014, he co-wrote “Celebrate” for Pitbull’s album Globalization, a song that was also used in the DreamWorks Animation film Penguins of Madagascar. That same year, he released the promotional single “L.U.V.” with a music video directed by Andrew Vallentine.

In 2015, his recording career accelerated into mainstream pop and R&B visibility through Atlantic Records and Artist Partner Group. He released “Marvin Gaye,” featuring Meghan Trainor, in February 2015, a single that topped charts in New Zealand, Ireland, and the United Kingdom and reached number twenty-one on the US Billboard Hot 100. That same year, he co-wrote, co-produced, and performed on Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” a tribute to Paul Walker for the Furious 7 soundtrack, with the rap lyrics credited to Khalifa and the remainder credited to Puth.

“See You Again” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for twelve nonconsecutive weeks and earned three Grammy nominations, Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo Group Performance, and Best Song Written for Visual Media, along with a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song. In 2016, he released his first full-length studio album, Nine Track Mind, which reached the top ten in the United Kingdom, peaked at number six on the Billboard 200, and was supported by singles that included “We Don’t Talk Anymore” featuring Selena Gomez, which peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100.

His second studio album, Voicenotes, established him as a solo hitmaker on the Hot 100 while keeping his work anchored in songwriting and production decisions. He released “Attention” on April 21, 2017 as the album’s lead single, and it peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, his highest charting solo single on that chart. “How Long” followed in October 2017 and peaked at number twenty-one, and he expanded his collaborative profile by co-producing and providing background vocals on Liam Payne’s “Bedroom Floor,” plus a feature on G Eazy’s “Sober.” In 2018, Voicenotes arrived on May 11 and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200; its release run included singles such as “Done for Me” featuring Kehlani and “Change” featuring James Taylor, and he performed “Change” at the March for Our Lives event in Los Angeles. The album later earned a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

From 2019 forward, his output moved between standalone singles, high-profile collaborations, soundtrack work, and a third studio album that grew out of social media process clips. In 2020, he contributed keyboard to four tracks on Ozzy Osbourne’s Ordinary Man and recorded “Summer Feelings” for the Scoob! soundtrack, plus “Free” for the Disney+ film The One and Only Ivan. In 2021, he co-wrote and co-produced “Stay” by the Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber, a song that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and he released “After All” with Elton John on John’s album The Lockdown Sessions.

In September 2021, he began documenting on TikTok how he combined sounds from different objects into pop songs, a series that went viral and led to “Light Switch” on January 20, 2022, the first single from his third studio album, Charlie. He followed with “That’s Hilarious” and “Left and Right,” featuring Jungkook, and then released Charlie on October 7, 2022, along with a music video for “Loser.” His announced fourth studio album, Whatever’s Clever!, is scheduled for release in 2026, with “Changes” released as the lead single on October 16, 2025, and “Beat Yourself Up” released on January 16, 2026.

The awards record around Puth’s catalog is anchored by major wins tied to “See You Again” and other collaborations, plus recurring nominations that track his role as an artist, writer, and producer. He won two Billboard Music Awards in 2016 for Top Hot 100 Song and Top Rap Song for “See You Again,” and he won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Song for “See You Again,” along with an award from the Hollywood Music in Media Awards for song in a feature film. He won a Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award in 2016 for Favorite Collaboration for “See You Again,” and he received Teen Choice Awards in 2015 that included Choice Music R&B Hip Hop Song for “See You Again.”

His Grammy recognition includes the three 2016 nominations tied to “See You Again” and the 2019 nomination for Voicenotes in Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. Outside of music releases, his work has also included on camera and broadcast roles, including serving as an advisor or mentor assistant on The Voice across multiple seasons, appearing on Songland, participating in the 2020 television special One World Together at Home, and starring in a Roku faux reality series, The Charlie Puth Show, which began streaming on October 4, 2024.
