Christopher Cross launched his music career from San Antonio, Texas, where he developed his talent as a guitarist and vocalist before emerging as a solo artist at the end of the 1970s. Prior to signing a record deal, Cross had performed with a local cover band named Flash, but it was his self-titled solo debut released in 1979 that catapulted him into national recognition. The album introduced a polished, melodic sound that aligned perfectly with the soft rock sensibilities of the era. From the outset, Cross stood out for his refined musicality and the seamless blend of pop, jazz, and adult contemporary influences in his compositions.
His 1979 debut, Christopher Cross, was a commercial and critical breakthrough. The album produced four hit singles, including “Ride Like the Wind” featuring backing vocals by Michael McDonald, and “Sailing,” a song that became synonymous with the yacht rock era. “Sailing” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and won three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The album also won Album of the Year, while Cross was awarded Best New Artist in 1981—making him the only artist to ever win all four of the major General Field Grammys in a single night. That unprecedented achievement immediately placed Cross among the most recognized recording artists of the early 1980s.
Following the extraordinary success of his debut, Cross released his second studio album, Another Page, in 1983. While it didn’t reach the same heights as his first, the album still featured well-received singles such as “Think of Laura” and “All Right.” “Think of Laura” became a radio favorite and gained further attention after being featured on the popular television show General Hospital. Cross continued to work with top-tier studio musicians and producers, preserving the smooth and sophisticated sound that had come to define his work.
In 1981, Cross also earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do),” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen. The song, used in the hit film Arthur starring Dudley Moore, topped the Billboard Hot 100 and added to his growing list of accolades. By this point, Cross was widely regarded not only as a talented vocalist but as a songwriter capable of crafting enduring pop standards.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Cross continued releasing studio albums including Every Turn of the World (1985), Back of My Mind (1988), and Rendezvous (1992), though none achieved the commercial impact of his earliest releases. Nevertheless, he retained a loyal fan base and maintained a steady touring schedule. His ability to evolve musically without chasing trends allowed him to remain a respected figure in the music industry. Albums such as Window (1994) and Walking in Avalon (1998) showcased his maturity as a songwriter and his dedication to melodic craftsmanship.
Cross’s later career included a mix of solo albums and live recordings, with projects like Dr. Faith (2011), Take Me As I Am (2017), and The Complete Works (2020), a box set compiling his catalog along with rare and unreleased material. He continued to tour extensively around the world, performing both solo and with full bands, offering longtime fans live renditions of his most iconic songs. In 2020, he revealed that he had contracted COVID-19 and had suffered temporary paralysis as a result of the virus, later recovering and publicly sharing his story to raise awareness about the disease’s neurological effects.
Over the course of his career, Christopher Cross has released more than 15 albums, blending smooth pop textures with jazz-inflected instrumentation and heartfelt lyrics. While his commercial peak occurred early on, his influence within soft rock and adult contemporary circles has endured. His music is often cited as central to the “yacht rock” genre, and his early recordings continue to receive regular airplay on classic hits and adult contemporary stations.
In addition to his Grammy and Academy Award wins, Cross has been recognized for his technical musical abilities, including his guitar work, which is often underappreciated in discussions of his vocal talent. Beyond performance, he has lent his voice and songwriting to charitable causes, participating in benefit concerts and contributing to social and humanitarian efforts over the years. His resilience in the face of health challenges and his ongoing commitment to music have only added to the respect he commands from fans and peers alike.
