Dinosaur Jr. was formed in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1984. Originally called Dinosaur until legal issues forced a change to Dinosaur Jr., the band was founded by guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow, and drummer Murph. Known for their distinct melding of punk rock noise with classic rock influences, Dinosaur Jr.’s loud, feedback-heavy sound helped restore the prominence of the guitar solo in indie rock. The band has released several albums to critical acclaim, achieving a significant impact on the alternative rock and grunge scenes that would follow. Despite internal tensions leading to initial breakups and lineup changes, the original members have reunited, continuing to record and perform together.
The band’s initial run in the 1980s and early 1990s was marked by creative tension, particularly between J Mascis and Lou Barlow, resulting in Barlow’s departure in 1989. After his exit, Mascis took Dinosaur Jr. in a more controlled direction with a rotating cast of bassists and drummers until 1997 when the band initially disbanded. In 2005, the original lineup reunited, leading to a resurgence in popularity and a series of new albums that continued their legacy. The band has been characterized by its fuzz-drenched guitars, Mascis’s drawling vocals, and distinct solos, all of which have contributed to their status as a key influence in alternative and noise rock.
J Mascis
J Mascis, the band’s frontman, founded Dinosaur Jr. in 1984 and is the primary songwriter and vocalist. Known for his distinctive guitar playing and solos, Mascis’s style has been a defining element of the band’s sound. He has played on all of Dinosaur Jr.’s albums, from their debut Dinosaur in 1985 through to their latest releases, including Sweep It Into Space (2021). Outside of Dinosaur Jr., J Mascis has a successful solo career and has been involved in several other musical projects including Witch, The Fog, and Deep Wound. His contributions to music extend beyond playing; he is also recognized for his production work.
Murph
Murph (Emmett Jefferson Murphy III) has been the drummer for Dinosaur Jr. for most of the band’s existence. He played on the band’s early albums up until his departure in 1993, after which he was involved in various other musical projects. Murph returned to the band for the 2005 reunion and has remained since then, contributing to the band’s later albums like Beyond (2007), Farm (2009), and others. His drumming is noted for its heavy, driving style that complements Mascis’s guitar work.
Lou Barlow
Lou Barlow was the original bassist and also contributed as a vocalist and songwriter until he left in 1989 due to personal tensions within the band. During his early years with Dinosaur Jr., he played on albums such as Dinosaur (1985), You’re Living All Over Me (1987), and Bug (1988). After leaving Dinosaur Jr., Lou Barlow became prominent with his own bands, Sebadoh and Folk Implosion, both of which have been influential in the indie rock and lo-fi scenes. Barlow rejoined Dinosaur Jr. for their 2005 reunion and has since been a regular member, contributing to the group’s subsequent albums.
