Hoobastank came together in Agoura Hills, California, in 1994, when vocalist Doug Robb and guitarist Dan Estrin, who had known each other before facing off in a high school battle of the bands, decided to start a group of their own. They brought in drummer Chris Hesse and bassist Markku Lappalainen, forming the lineup that launched the band’s early years. Before the major label success, the group built a name for itself on the Southern California club circuit, playing venues such as the Cobalt Cafe alongside acts like Incubus and Linkin Park. In those early days, the band’s sound included saxophone, with Jeremy Wasser involved on their first full-length independent recordings.

The first album in their catalog was They Sure Don’t Make Basketball Shorts As They Used To in 1998, a self-released record that captured the band’s early sound before their sound shifted. A second full-length album titled Forward was completed around the time Island Records signed them in 2000, but the group decided the material pointed toward a better future without the saxophone, so that record was shelved. Some of its songs were later reworked for their major label debut.

That first national release, Hoobastank, arrived in November 2001 and gave the band its first real breakthrough. “Crawling in the Dark” became a major rock radio hit, reaching number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 3 on the Modern Rock chart, and number 7 on the Mainstream Rock chart. “Running Away” pushed them further, climbing to number 44 on the Hot 100 and number 2 on the Modern Rock chart, while “Remember Me” also charted. The album itself reached number 25 on the Billboard 200, topped the Billboard Heatseekers chart, and was certified platinum.

Their biggest commercial moment came with The Reason in 2003. Working with producer Howard Benson, the band made an album that pushed their music toward a more melodic and emotionally direct style. The first single, “Out of Control,” introduced the record, and “Same Direction” followed with strong rock chart placements. Then came the title track, “The Reason,” the song that changed everything. It reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, hit number 1 on the United States Modern Rock chart and the World Modern Rock chart, and also became a major international hit, reaching number 10 in Australia and number 12 in the United Kingdom. In Canada it spent 21 weeks at number 1, setting a new record at the time. The album brought the band a far larger international audience, and touring with Linkin Park on the Meteora world tour only expanded that profile.

The next studio album, Every Man for Himself, arrived in May 2006 and debuted at number 12 on the Billboard chart. It was later certified gold in the United States and produced the singles “If I Were You,” “Inside of You,” and “Born to Lead.” Around this period the band went through an important lineup change, with Markku Lappalainen departing after the 2005 summer tour and a series of bass players following before the group stabilized again. Even with those changes, Hoobastank remained commercially visible and kept its place on rock radio.

The band kept recording through the late 2000s and 2010s with For(N)ever in 2009, led by the single “My Turn,” and then broadened its release history with a greatest hits collection and an acoustic project. In 2010 the band issued “We Are One” for a compilation supporting the Haiti earthquake crisis through Music for Relief, and later that year released the acoustic album Is This the Day? In Japan only. They returned with Fight or Flight in 2012, featuring “This Is Gonna Hurt,” “Can You Save Me?” and “Incomplete,” then followed with Push Pull in 2018, introduced by the single “More Beautiful.” Counting their full-length studio releases, Hoobastank has issued 7 albums.

Their biggest hit singles remain easy to identify. “The Reason” stands far above the rest in terms of worldwide recognition, but “Crawling in the Dark,” “Running Away,” “Out of Control,” “Same Direction,” “If I Were You,” and “Inside of You” were all important records in the band’s career. Commercially, the group has sold 10 million albums worldwide, underscoring how much larger their reach became once The Reason connected. Their mix of alternative rock, post-grunge, and hard rock gave them a sound that translated across rock radio, mainstream audiences, and international markets.

Awards and nominations also marked the band’s peak years. Hoobastank received 3 Grammy Award nominations connected to The Reason, including Best Rock Album, Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and Song of the Year. The band also earned Billboard Music Award nominations in 2002 and 2004, and “The Reason” picked up a BDS Spin Award win for 800,000 spins. Internationally, Hoobastank won Favorite International Rock Act at the 2005 MTV Asia Video Music Awards, “The Reason” won Best Rock Video at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards Japan, and the band also won Musicians’ Choice at the 2005 Texas Buzz Awards. Those honors, along with the staying power of their biggest songs, explain why Hoobastank has remained a recognizable name for rock listeners long after its first breakthrough. Outside the core album cycle, the band also created a documentary series in 2022 about the making of its self-titled debut and uploaded it to its official YouTube channel to mark that album’s 20th anniversary, another sign that the group has continued to preserve and revisit its own history while remaining active
