Jermaine Lamarr Cole, professionally known as J. Cole, was born on January 28, 1985, at an American military base in Frankfurt, West Germany, and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. After graduating from Terry Sanford High School, Cole attended St. John’s University in New York City, where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in communications and a minor in business. Cole’s early music career began with the release of his debut mixtape, The Come Up, in 2007, which was followed by two more mixtapes: The Warm Up in 2009 and Friday Night Lights in 2010. His persistent efforts to hand out his demo tape eventually led to his signing with Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s record label, in 2009.
Cole’s debut studio album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, was released on September 27, 2011. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold over 218,000 copies in its first week. Certified platinum by the RIAA, it featured hit singles such as “Work Out,” “Can’t Get Enough,” and “Nobody’s Perfect.” Cole World: The Sideline Story marked the arrival of Cole as a force in hip hop and earned him a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2012 BET Awards.
His sophomore album, Born Sinner, arrived on June 18, 2013. The record debuted at number two before climbing to number one on the Billboard 200 and was later certified double platinum. Notable singles from the album include “Power Trip” featuring Miguel, “Crooked Smile” featuring TLC, and “She Knows” featuring Amber Coffman. “Power Trip” reached the top twenty on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum, further establishing Cole’s prominence in the genre.
J. Cole released his third studio album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, on December 9, 2014. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, was certified triple platinum by the RIAA, and spawned hits such as “No Role Modelz,” “Wet Dreamz,” and “G.O.M.D.” All twelve tracks from the album charted on the Billboard Hot 100, and “No Role Modelz” became Cole’s highest-charting single at the time, peaking at number thirty-six. In 2016, Cole received his first Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album for 2014 Forest Hills Drive.
4 Your Eyez Only, Cole’s fourth studio album, was released on December 9, 2016, and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The album achieved platinum status with no guest features, a rare accomplishment in modern hip hop. The lead single, “Deja Vu,” peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, and “Neighbors” also charted in the top forty.
In April 2018, Cole dropped his fifth studio album, KOD, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and broke several streaming records. The album featured three singles—“KOD,” “ATM,” and “Motiv8”—that all charted within the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100. KOD was certified platinum within a month of release, and Cole performed tracks from the album at major festivals including Rolling Loud and Wireless Festival.
His sixth studio album, The Off-Season, was released on May 14, 2021, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and receiving widespread critical acclaim. The album included the singles “Interlude,” “My Life” (featuring 21 Savage and Morray), “Amari,” and “Pride Is the Devil.” “My Life” peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Cole’s highest-charting single to date. The Off-Season was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards.
J. Cole has also released several compilation albums and collaborative projects. Notably, he is the founder of Dreamville Records, which has signed artists including Bas, Cozz, EarthGang, JID, Ari Lennox, and Omen. The label’s compilation album Revenge of the Dreamers III debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2019 and was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2020 Grammy Awards. The project produced hit singles like “Middle Child” and “Down Bad.”
Cole’s accolades include multiple BET Hip Hop Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Soul Train Music Awards, and nominations for Grammy Awards. He won his first Grammy for Best Rap Song in 2020 as a featured artist on 21 Savage’s “A Lot.” In addition, Cole has been recognized for his songwriting, producing, and influence in hip hop culture.
Outside of music, Cole has participated in high-profile social and political initiatives. He has spoken out on issues such as racial inequality and police brutality and has supported educational causes through his Dreamville Foundation, which provides resources to youth and families in his hometown of Fayetteville. Cole also briefly pursued a career in professional basketball, signing with the Rwanda Patriots in the Basketball Africa League in 2021.
Throughout his career, Cole has embarked on multiple headlining tours, including the Cole World… World Tour, What Dreams May Come Tour, Forest Hills Drive Tour, 4 Your Eyez Only Tour, and KOD Tour. He has performed at major international music festivals and venues, earning a reputation for his dynamic live performances and consistent chart success.
