Richards released his debut solo album Talk Is Cheap in 1988. The album was recorded with his backing band the X-Pensive Winos, which featured Steve Jordan on drums, Waddy Wachtel on guitar, Ivan Neville on keyboards, Charley Drayton on bass, and Sarah Dash on vocals. The record was critically acclaimed for its raw energy and authenticity. Songs like “Take It So Hard” and “Make No Mistake” received praise for highlighting Richards’ distinctive voice and unfiltered songwriting style. Many critics considered the album one of the strongest solo projects to come from any member of the Rolling Stones.
In 1992 Richards followed up with Main Offender, again working with the X-Pensive Winos. The record showcased a more stripped down and aggressive approach compared to the debut. Tracks like “Wicked As It Seems” and “Eileen” became concert staples when Richards toured behind the album. The project further solidified his ability to lead a band outside of the Stones, and the chemistry with his collaborators gave the music a loose but powerful edge that fans connected with.
Richards did not rush to release another solo project but instead reissued Talk Is Cheap and Main Offender decades later with bonus material and live recordings, keeping those works alive for new generations. In 2015 Richards returned with Crosseyed Heart, a record that blended rock, blues, reggae, and country influences. The album featured contributions from Steve Jordan, Waddy Wachtel, and Norah Jones, who appeared on the duet “Illusion.” Songs such as “Trouble” and the title track displayed Richards’ continuing vitality as a songwriter and performer even after decades in the spotlight.
In total Richards has released three full studio albums as a solo artist. He has also issued several live albums and compilations that showcase his tours with the X-Pensive Winos. While none of these works have charted at the level of the Rolling Stones, they remain beloved by fans for their honesty, grit, and the joy Richards clearly takes in making music on his own terms.
Beyond the studio Richards has occasionally stepped outside of music. He published his autobiography Life in 2010, which became a best seller and offered an unflinching look at his career, personal struggles, and musical journey. The book earned widespread acclaim and deepened the respect for Richards as both a musician and a storyteller. His solo concerts and collaborations have also demonstrated his generosity toward other musicians, often shining a light on his bandmates and giving space for them to contribute creatively.
The list below only features songs Keith Richards released as a solo artist. It does not include the songs he wrote with Mick Jagger for the Rolling Stones, as those songs are all credited as Jagger/Richards.
