Sombr is the stage name of Shane Michael Boose, a singer, songwriter, and record producer connected to New York City and later Los Angeles. His activity is listed as beginning in 2021. He is credited as a multi instrumentalist, with guitar, piano, bass, and drums among the instruments associated with him. His releases have been tied to SMB and to Warner Records, and his catalog progresses from early singles to an EP and then to a debut studio album.
Long before the larger audience arrived, the foundation was built around self guided production. Near the end of elementary school, he started experimenting with multitrack recording and harmony ideas using GarageBand, then moved to Logic Pro X in middle school while learning techniques through online tutorials. By high school, the emphasis stayed on creating records under his own control instead of relying on outside production. He attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School as a vocal major, then dropped out during junior year after the release of “Caroline” in June 2022. His family background includes a connection to amfAR through his parents’ work there.
The Sombr project first appeared publicly with “Nothing Left to Say,” released in October 2021. He has explained that the name was built from his initials, SMB, and that it reflected his emotional state at the time. After “Caroline” went viral, he signed with Warner Records in early 2023 and released “Weak,” which is described as his first single with the label. Later in 2023 he issued his debut EP, In Another Life, released in September and co produced by Tony Berg.
The biggest acceleration arrived in March 2025, when “Back to Friends” and “Undressed” surged after gaining traction on TikTok. Both songs reached the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200. “Undressed” reached number one in Ireland and placed in the top five in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, while “Back to Friends” also placed in the top five in Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand.
Those releases were followed by high profile performances in 2025. On May 20, 2025, he made his late night television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon performing “Back to Friends.” On June 3, 2025, he appeared on BBC Radio 1 for Live Lounge, performing “Undressed” and covering “Ribs” by Lorde. During the same summer stretch, he announced “We Never Dated” on June 17, 2025 and released it on June 20, 2025, then released “12 to 12” on July 25, 2025, supported by a music video featuring Addison Rae.
His debut studio album, I Barely Know Her, was announced on August 11, 2025 and released on August 22, 2025. The album included “Back to Friends,” “Undressed,” “We Never Dated,” and “12 to 12.” “We Never Dated” became a top forty hit in Ireland and the United Kingdom. “12 to 12” placed in the top ten in Australia, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, and it also reached the top fifty of both the Hot 100 and the Global 200.
Touring activity expanded alongside the chart run. He is credited with earlier supporting slots for Nessa Barrett and Daniel Seavey, then announced his first headlining run, The Late Nights & Young Romance Tour, described as spanning North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, with additional European dates scheduled into early 2026. His major awards recognition includes a 2025 win at the MTV Video Music Awards for Best Alternative Video for “Back to Friends,” nominations there for Best New Artist and Song of Summer for “12 to 12,” and a nomination for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards which he lost to Olivia Dean.
