Navigating the ever-evolving world of hip-hop, Travis Scott has carved out a distinctive place with a style defined by inventive production and a string of high-profile collaborations. Jacques Bermon Webster II, known professionally as Travis Scott, hails from Houston, Texas. Raised in Missouri City, a suburb southwest of Houston, he attended Elkins High School before moving on to the University of Texas at San Antonio. However, his passion for music led him to drop out and pursue his ambitions in the industry.
Travis Scott’s journey began with producing beats and forming musical partnerships in his teens. Early in his career, he was part of the duo The Graduates with longtime friend Chris Holloway, and later The Classmates with OG Chess. After relocating to New York City to focus on production and eventually moving to Los Angeles, Scott caught the attention of T.I. and Kanye West. These connections proved pivotal, with T.I. featuring on Scott’s first solo project and Kanye West inviting him to work on the G.O.O.D. Music label’s Cruel Summer album.
Scott’s first full-length mixtape, Owl Pharaoh, dropped in 2013, establishing him as a serious creative force. He quickly followed with the Days Before Rodeo mixtape in 2014, building buzz in the hip-hop community. His debut studio album, Rodeo, arrived in September 2015, featuring high-profile guests such as Quavo, Future, and Kanye West. The record spawned the single “Antidote,” which became Scott’s first hit to reach the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100.
Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight, Scott’s second studio album, landed in September 2016 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album included the hit single “Goosebumps” featuring Kendrick Lamar, which became a mainstay on radio and in clubs, further elevating Scott’s mainstream presence. The album also featured collaborations with André 3000, Kid Cudi, and The Weeknd.
Collaboration has been a hallmark of Scott’s career. In late 2017, he released Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho, a joint album with Quavo of Migos. This project debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and produced several successful tracks. Scott continued his collaborative momentum in 2018 by joining forces with Kanye West and Lil Uzi Vert on the single “Watch.”
The release of Astroworld in August 2018 marked a turning point, both critically and commercially. Named after a defunct Houston amusement park, the album featured the chart-topping single “Sicko Mode,” which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for over thirty weeks. The record also included “Stargazing,” “Stop Trying to Be God,” and “Yosemite,” among others, with guest appearances by Drake, Frank Ocean, and The Weeknd. Astroworld received a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.
Scott has continued to dominate charts with a string of successful singles and collaborations. In 2019, he formed the collective JackBoys with artists from his Cactus Jack Records imprint, releasing the JackBoys compilation, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Singles like “Highest in the Room” and “Out West” (featuring Young Thug) kept his momentum strong.
The year 2020 saw Travis Scott expanding his presence beyond music, headlining the virtual Astronomical concert event within the video game Fortnite, drawing millions of viewers. That same year, he released the single “The Scotts” with Kid Cudi, which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Scott’s fourth studio album, Utopia, arrived in July 2023 after significant anticipation. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, becoming his third consecutive number-one studio album. It featured the single “Meltdown” with Drake, along with contributions from Beyoncé, SZA, Playboi Carti, and others.
Throughout his career, Travis Scott has accumulated a substantial list of awards and nominations. He has received multiple BET Hip Hop Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards. His work has also earned him nominations at the Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and Best Melodic Rap Performance.
Outside of recording and performing, Scott’s influence extends into business, fashion, and philanthropy. He has collaborated with Nike and McDonald’s on exclusive merchandise and meal deals, respectively, drawing massive consumer attention. In 2017, he founded the Cactus Jack Foundation, aimed at empowering Houston youth through toy drives, scholarship programs, and educational initiatives.
Scott is also known for his high-energy live shows and music festivals. His annual Astroworld Festival in Houston attracts thousands of fans and showcases a wide array of performers. While the 2021 festival drew national attention due to a tragic crowd incident, Scott has continued his work both in and outside the studio.
The artist’s impact on pop culture is also seen in his work with major brands, multimedia projects, and through his own record label, Cactus Jack Records, which has helped launch the careers of Sheck Wes, Don Toliver, and others. He has appeared in film and television, contributed to soundtracks, and has been recognized as an innovator in merging music, technology, and fashion.
With every release, Travis Scott has shown a commitment to evolving his sound, working with diverse collaborators, and expanding his brand into new arenas. His discography includes four studio albums—Rodeo (2015), Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight (2016), Astroworld (2018), and Utopia (2023)—alongside collaborative projects and hit singles that have defined hip-hop over the past decade.
