Aerosmith thundered into the American rock scene from Boston in 1970, forging a blues-based hard rock sound that would become their trademark. The original lineup featured Steven Tyler on vocals, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford on guitars, Tom Hamilton on bass, and Joey Kramer on drums. This powerhouse quintet moved into a shared home at 1325 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, where they wrote music, rehearsed, and developed the chemistry that would fuel their decades-long career. Their band name came from Kramer, who had scribbled “aerosmith” in his notebooks after being inspired by Harry Nilsson’s album “Aerial Ballet.”
The band’s determined hustle paid off when they signed with Columbia Records in 1972 for $125,000. Their self-titled debut album appeared in 1973, establishing their bluesy rock foundation with songs like “Dream On,” which would later become one of their signature hits. Though initially peaking at just #166 on the charts, this album laid crucial groundwork. Their relentless touring schedule between albums helped build a devoted following as they released “Get Your Wings” in 1974, produced by Jack Douglas who would become a key collaborator throughout their career.
Aerosmith’s true breakthrough arrived with 1975’s “Toys in the Attic,” which propelled them into the mainstream with hits like “Sweet Emotion” (their first Top 40 single) and a re-released “Dream On” that reached #6. “Walk This Way” followed, hitting the Top 10 in 1977. The album, still considered one of their masterpieces, showcased their hard rock prowess while revealing exceptional songcraft. “Rocks” followed in 1976, achieving similar acclaim and producing hits like “Back in the Saddle” and “Last Child.” These mid-1970s albums cemented Aerosmith’s reputation as premier American hard rock artists, touring massive stadiums and developing a loyal fanbase dubbed the “Blue Army.”
By the late 1970s, however, rampant drug abuse and internal tensions threatened to destroy the band. Perry and Tyler earned the nickname “The Toxic Twins” due to their excessive substance use. These struggles culminated in Perry leaving the band in 1979, followed by Whitford in 1981. The band attempted to continue, releasing “Rock in a Hard Place” in 1982 with replacement guitarists, but it failed to match their earlier commercial success. A dramatic reunion of the original lineup occurred in 1984, though their initial comeback album “Done with Mirrors” (1985) delivered disappointing results.
Aerosmith’s career resurrection began in earnest with an unexpected collaboration in 1986. Hip-hop group Run-D.M.C. covered “Walk This Way,” featuring Perry and Tyler in both the recording and groundbreaking music video. This crossover hit introduced Aerosmith to a new generation of fans. Following successful addiction treatment, the band returned with “Permanent Vacation” (1987), which sold five million copies and spawned three Top 20 singles: “Dude (Looks Like a Lady),” “Angel,” and “Rag Doll.” They followed this triumph with “Pump” (1989), yielding hits like “Love in an Elevator,” “Janie’s Got a Gun” (which won them their first Grammy Award), and “What It Takes.” This extraordinary comeback has been described as one of the most remarkable in rock history.
The 1990s saw Aerosmith reach unprecedented commercial heights with “Get a Grip” (1993), their first album to debut at #1. Singles like “Livin’ on the Edge,” “Cryin’,” “Amazing,” and “Crazy” dominated radio and MTV, with their trilogy of videos starring Alicia Silverstone (and Liv Tyler in “Crazy”) becoming cultural touchstones. The band reached their commercial pinnacle in 1998 with “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” written by Diane Warren for the film “Armageddon.” This power ballad became their first and only #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. Throughout this period, Aerosmith collected numerous awards including four Grammys and ten MTV Video Music Awards.
Aerosmith’s reach extends far beyond music into various entertainment spheres. They appeared in films like “Wayne’s World 2,” inspired video games like “Revolution X” and “Guitar Hero: Aerosmith,” and even launched their own roller coaster at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. Their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and 2001 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame further cemented their legendary status. In 2020, they received the prestigious MusiCares Person of the Year award, recognizing both their musical contributions and philanthropic efforts.
Impressively, Aerosmith holds the title of best-selling American hard rock band of all time, with over 150 million records sold worldwide, including over 85 million in the United States. Their extensive catalog includes 25 gold albums, 18 platinum albums, and 12 multi-platinum albums—giving them the record for most total certifications by an American group. Their influence extends to generations of rock artists, with members of bands like Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, and Mötley Crüe citing Aerosmith as major inspirations. Despite health challenges, lineup changes, and shifting musical landscapes, Aerosmith has maintained their edge through six decades, officially retiring from touring in August 2024 after Steven Tyler suffered an irreparable vocal cord injury.
