Turnstile represents one of the most refreshing and energetic forces in modern rock, a band that has successfully bridged hardcore punk with melody, groove, and experimentation. Formed in 2010 in Baltimore, Maryland, the band was founded by vocalist Brendan Yates, guitarist Brady Ebert, bassist Franz Lyons, guitarist Sean Cullen, and drummer Daniel Fang. Yates and Fang had both been active in the Baltimore punk scene, particularly with the band Trapped Under Ice, and their shared desire to create something more open, expressive, and free-spirited led to the birth of Turnstile. From their earliest days, the group’s performances were characterized by explosive energy and an almost communal connection with their audiences, a quality that has remained central to their identity.

Turnstile’s debut EP, Pressure to Succeed, was released in 2011 and quickly established them as one of the most promising new acts in the hardcore scene. Their sound paid homage to classic hardcore influences while introducing more rhythmic and melodic elements that would later define their evolution. The band followed this up in 2013 with another EP, Step 2 Rhythm, released through Reaper Records. Both EPs showcased their ability to balance aggression and positivity, helping them stand out in a genre that often leaned toward darker, angrier themes. Turnstile’s message centered on unity, freedom, and individuality, and it resonated deeply with fans across the underground music world.

Their first full-length album, Nonstop Feeling, arrived in January 2015 and marked a major step forward. Released through Reaper Records, the album blended hardcore intensity with elements of funk, alternative rock, and even hints of psychedelic soundscapes. Tracks like “Drop” and “Out of Rage” captured their trademark energy, while songs such as “Can’t Deny It” showcased a more melodic sensibility. The record received critical praise for its adventurous approach, and its success led to an intense touring schedule across North America and Europe. Nonstop Feeling was a bold declaration that Turnstile was not content to remain within the confines of any single genre.

In 2018, the band released Time & Space through Roadrunner Records, their first release on a major label. This album represented another leap forward, both sonically and creatively. Produced by Will Yip, Time & Space was a concise yet powerful statement that fused hardcore roots with alt-rock polish and bursts of experimental creativity. The album included standout tracks such as “Real Thing,” “Generator,” and “Moon,” and even featured guest vocals from Diplo and Sheer Mag’s Tina Halladay. The record was widely acclaimed for its inventiveness, landing on several year-end lists and introducing Turnstile to a broader audience without alienating their hardcore fanbase. The band also gained recognition for their dynamic music videos and live performances, where their boundless energy and crowd interaction became legendary.

Three years later, in 2021, Turnstile released Glow On, which would become their defining album and a landmark in modern rock. Produced again by Will Yip, Glow On expanded on everything that had made the band special, merging hardcore aggression with dreamy textures, pop hooks, and atmospheric experimentation. The album featured songs like “Blackout,” “Mystery,” and “New Heart Design,” which captured both their ferocity and emotional vulnerability. The single “Holiday” became one of their most recognizable tracks, showcasing their ability to make music that was both cathartic and accessible. Glow On received universal acclaim from critics and fans alike, appearing on multiple “Best Albums of the Year” lists, including those from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and NME.

The success of Glow On catapulted Turnstile into the mainstream music world in ways few hardcore bands had ever achieved. The band performed on national television programs such as Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, exposing their explosive energy to millions of new listeners. They also received three nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, including Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song for “Holiday,” and Best Metal Performance for “Blackout.” These nominations were a testament to how far Turnstile had come, breaking barriers between underground punk and mainstream recognition while remaining true to their artistic integrity.

Outside of their recorded work, Turnstile has been known for their collaborative spirit and visual creativity. In 2022, they released a short film titled Turnstile Love Connection, which served as both a companion to their EP of the same name and a visual extension of the Glow On era. Directed by Brendan Yates, the film showcased the band’s growing interest in art and visual storytelling. They have also collaborated with numerous artists and organizations, emphasizing the inclusive and positive spirit that defines their music.

The band won a Grammy Award in 2026 for Best Rock Album for their album Never Enough.
