Top 10 Alias Songs

Alias Songs

Our top ten Alias songs list presents the music of a Canadian supergroup known for its AOR and hard rock influences. Alias was formed in 1988 by vocalist Freddy Curci and guitarist Steve DeMarchi (former members of the arena rock band Sheriff). Freddy and Steve would later team up with bassist Steve Fossen, drummer Mike Derosier, and guitarist Roger Fisher (former members of the band Heart) forming the band’s original lineup. Unfortunately, Alias’ glory in the rock scene was short-lived with the band only enjoying success in the early ‘90s. Over the years, the band has issued only two studio albums.

Alias’ Album Releases Over the Years

In June 1990, members of Alias issued the band’s eponymous debut studio album. The album was issued through Capitol Records, (once) home to Alice in Chains, Beastie Boys, Nat King Cole, Saosin, and Nine Inch Nails. Steve’s brother Denny DeMarchi (once a touring musician for The Cranberries) made a significant contribution to this album having played a role in its engineering. Denny DeMarchi also made a significant contribution to the album as a keyboardist and backing vocalist.

Alias was a mainstream success rising to position one hundred and fourteen on the Billboard 200. The album also graced the album charts in other countries such as Denmark and Austria. Alias was also a commercial success in the US where it earned gold certification—the album earned platinum certification in Canada too. “More Than Words Can Say,” “Waiting for Love,” “After All the Love Is Gone,” “Haunted Heart,” and “One More Chance” are some of the best Alias songs from the album.

Despite recording its sophomore studio album Never Say Never in 1992, Alias didn’t issue the album until 2009. The move was highly influenced by the impact of the flourishing grunge scene on the fortunes of hard rock/metal. However, the band’s lead vocalist Freddy Curci proceeded to record some of the songs from Never Say Never in his 1994 debut studio album Dreamer’s Road.

James Christian of House of Lords also recorded several songs from Never Say Never for his debut solo LP Rude Awakening. Eventually, Alias issued the album Never Say Never in 2009. Unfortunately, the album failed to match the success the band achieved with its debut studio album. Never Say Never is home to some of the best Alias songs including “All I Want is You,” “Woman Enough,” “Give Me a Reason to Stay,” “How Much Longer is Forever,” and “Diamonds.”

Alias’ Legacy

Alias served as a vessel through which ex-members of the bands Sheriff and Heart extended their musical pursuits. Unfortunately, the unrivaled influence of the grunge scene saw some AOR and hard rock bands including Alias lose popularity unable to rekindle their spark again. Nevertheless, a few power ballads from Alias remind us of one of Canada’s promising supergroups of the early 90s. Here we look at the ten best Alias songs of all time.

#10- Woman Enough

Ushering us to the ten best Alias songs list is the pulsating hit “Woman Enough.” The song is the album opening track to the band’s sophomore studio album Never Say Never. “Woman Enough” gives the album Never Say Never a hard-hitting start that showcases the rekindled high-energy performance by the band. The powerful delivery made by the band members on this song is reminiscent of the band’s musicianship in the album Alias

#9- The Power

We shift our focus to the band’s eponymous debut studio album where we find the hit “The Power,” the ninth pick on our all-time best Alias songs list. “The Power” is an anthemic AOR hit that illustrates Alias’ ability to churn out high-energy hits. Alluring vocal harmonies call for attention from the beginning of this song sailing us through to the end—Freddy goes a notch higher to showcase his vocal dexterity in this song. “The Power” was a mainstream success in Canada where it rose to number thirty-two on the RPM 100 Music Chart.

#8- Into the Fire

Coming in at the eighth spot on our all-time best Alias songs list is the hit “Into the Fire.” The song was penned by Steve DeMarchi in collaboration with Freddy Curci and featured on the 1991 compilation album Nintendo: White Knuckle Scorin’, an album dedicated to the late talent agent Bobby Brooks who together with blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, met their death in a helicopter crash in 1990.

Others artists who contributed to the compilation album Nintendo: White Knuckle Scorin’ include Roy Orbison, Jellyfish, Britny Fox, and Dire Straits among others. Despite not making it to the mainstream charts, “Into the Fire” is among the standout songs by Alias whose glory lives on to date.

#7- All I Want Is You

“All I Want Is You” is one of the most sought-after tracks off Alias’ sophomore studio album Never Say Never. While most of the songs on this list might bring out the best of Alias’ hard rock explorations, songs like “All I Want Is You” give us a taste of the band’s fascinating AOR/melodic rock sound.

Freddy Curci steals the show in this song with his impressive vocal delivery. The alluring backing vocals from then other band members add more glamour to this hit. In 1994, Curci re-recorded this song with his version getting featured on his debut studio album Dreamer’s Road

#6- After All the Love is Gone

Number six on our all-time best Alias songs list is the tremendous hit “After All the Love is Gone.” The song is yet another impressive hit by Alias from the band’s eponymous debut studio album. “After All the Love is Gone” finds the singer crooning about how no efforts by his former lover will make him stay when all the love is depleted. Unfortunately, “After All the Love is Gone” is yet another fan-favorite pick that never made it to the mainstream charts.

#5- How Much Longer Is Forever

Never Say Never, the band’s sophomore studio album, is home to the fifth pick on our ten best Alias songs list “How Much Longer Is Forever.” “How Much Longer Is Forever” is by far the emblem of Alias’ musicianship on Never Say Never. Great vocals, impressive instrumentation (especially the killer guitar riffs), and prodigious songwriting skills make “How Much Longer Is Forever” a standout track off the album.

#4- Haunted Heart

Alias never earned massive success like other AOR bands such as Foreigner and Survivor. However, looking at songs like “Haunted Heart” it is quite evident that the only misfortune to Alias’ musical pursuits was timing! With the grunge scene quickly taking root, there was no perfect space for bands like Alias to flex their musical muscle. “Haunted Heart” is an amalgam of prodigious lyrics and impressive delivery (both in the vocals and the instrumentation). The song made it to the RPM 100 Music Chart, peaking at number thirty-five.

#3- Perfect World

After releasing a successful debut studio album, Alias was contracted to perform a song that would be featured on the soundtrack of the comedy film Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead. The result was the hit “Perfect World,” a song that won the hearts of many Alias fans. Other artists who were featured on the soundtrack of the 1991 film include Modern English, Valentine, and Spinal Tap among others.

“Perfect World” was a song originally performed by Tonio K, an American singer whose music has been recorded by artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Al Green, and Wynonna Judd. The song was a mainstream success rising to position fifty-one on the Canada RPM 100 Music Chart. “Perfect World” also made it to the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at number ninety. Unfortunately, “Perfect World” is Alias’ last song to make it to the mainstream charts.

#2- Waiting for Love

“Waiting for Love” is yet an alluring hit by Alias from the band’s eponymous debut studio album. The song’s lyrics were penned by Brett Walker (who worked with other singers including Jonathan Cain of Journey and Jimi Jamison of Survivor) and Jeff Paris (once session musician for Bill Withers). “Waiting for Love” was a mainstream success rising to the thirteenth spot on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also graced the UK Singles Chart peaking at number eighty-seven. “Waiting for Love” made it to the fourth spot on the Canada RPM 100 Music Chart.

#1- More Than Words Can Say

Number one on our all-time best Alias songs list is the ravishing hit “More Than Words Can Say.” The song is Alias’ signature hit off the band’s eponymous debut studio album. “More Than Words Can Say” was penned by Freddy Curci and Steve DeMarchi. The song went ahead to receive the Million-air Status from BMI—this made the song one of the most-played rock ballads of all time.

“More Than Words Can Say” was a mainstream success topping the Canada RPM 100 Music Chart and Canada Adult Contemporary Chart. The song is Alias’ highest-charting song on the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at number two on the chart. “More Than Words Can Say” was covered by the musical group Six Part Invention in 2013.
