# 10 – Come See About Me
We open our top 10 Tedeschi Trucks Band Songs list with the excellent track “Come See About Me.” It’s the perfect song to open this list with. The song was released on the band’s first album, entitled Revelator. The album was released in 2011. “Come See About Me” was also placed as the album’s opening cut. The song opens immediately with Derek Trucks’s excellent guitar work, then slams right into Susan Tedeschi’s brilliant, soulful, blues-infused vocals. In 10 seconds, it’s welcome to the sound of the Tedeschi Trucks Band.
The song “Come See About Me” is an original by Tedeschi Trucks Band. It was written by Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Tyler Greenwell, Mike Mattison, and Theodore Pecchio. The song’s infectious guitar lick and feel-good old-school groove were to die for. It instantly established this band as a welcome reprieve from all the other musical nonsense released in 2011. Great new rock and blues songs played by real musicians, sung with soul and groove. Amen!
The band on the Revelator album consisted of musicians Derek Trucks on lead guitar, Susan Tedeschi on guitar and lead vocals, Oteil Burbridge on bass, Kofi Burbridge on keys, Tyler Greenwell and J. J. Johnson on drums and percussion, Kebbi Williams on saxophone, Maurice “Mobetta” Brown on trumpet, Saunders Sermons on trombone and Mike Mattison and Mark Rivers on backing vocals.
# 9 – Anyhow
Continuing with our Top 10 Tedeschi Trucks Band Songs list, we turn to their classic song “Anyhow.” The song was initially released on the album Let Me Get By. It was the band’s third studio album. It was released in 2016. The song “Anyhow” was placed as the album’s opening cut. Mike Mattison, Derek Trucks, and Susan Tedeschi wrote the song.
Derek Trucks starts this one with some excellent guitar strumming while Susan Tedeschi howls in the background, giving us chills. The sound of the drums steps in and lights it all up. The backing vocals give the song warmth. It’s incredible how great this sounds, wrapped in a beautifully written composition.
The personnel on the Let Me Get By album differed slightly from those on the opening cut of their first album. It had been five years since the release of their first album. The Let Me Get By record featured in the band Derek Trucks on lead guitar, Susan Tedeschi on guitar and lead vocals, Tim Lefebvre on bass, Kofi Burbridge on keys, Tyler Greenwell and J. J. Johnson on drums and percussion, Kebbi Williams on saxophone, Maurice “Mobetta” Brown and Ephraim Owens on trumpet, Elizabeth Lea on trombone and Mike Mattison, Mark Rivers and Alecia Chakour on backing vocals.
# 8 – Keep On Growing
This song is perfectly titled because that’s precisely what the band does with its arrangement of this classic. The legendary song “Keep On Growing” is widely respected, as is the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s version of the Eric Clapton and Bobby Whitlock classic. The band is all in on this one. Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi play some great solos. The vocal duet between Susan Tedeschi and the other band members is out of sight. It cooks, it kills, it chills, it fills. Yeah, we get a little excited writing about music this darn good. Help me, mama! The song was released on the band’s Live From The Fox Oakland live album. The double album was released in 2017.
# 7 – The Storm
Choosing only ten songs for this Top 10 Tedeschi Trucks Band Songs list was hard. Even though the band does not have an extensive catalog to draw from, what they have released is simply stunning. Four studio albums and two live records stand as some of the best music of the 21st century. The song at number seven, titled “The Storm,” is from the album Made Up Mind.
This one starts out with a furious guitar lick by Derek Trucks, carried along with some excellent drum work until it all slams into the brilliance of Susan Tedeschi’s vocal chops. This one is down-and-dirty blues rock. I love it …..how could you not? The chord changes from blues to jazz in the song’s mid-sections are to die for when Derek Trucks lays down those solos, unlike anyone else in the business. Did we say how much we love this one? Did we? Did we?
# 6 – Don’t Know What It Means
And they keep getting better and better….. The song “Don’t Know What It Means” was the opening track on the group’s grand live album Live from the Fox Oakland. Everyone’s involved in this one right from the start. On this smoking live album released in 2017, the band consisted of Derek Trucks on lead guitar, Susan Tedeschi on guitar and lead vocals, Tim Lefebvre on bass, Kofi Burbridge on keys, Tyler Greenwell and J. J. Johnson on drums and percussion, Kebbi Williams on saxophone, Ephraim Owens on trumpet, Elizabeth Lea on trombone and Mike Mattison on guitar and vocals and Mark Rivers and Alecia Chakour on backing vocals.
# 5 – Shame
This one starts out as heavy as it gets. It’s great guitar work by Derek Trucks, and some killer horn riffs just blow up this opening. Susan Tedeschi brings it all home with that golden blues voice. This one rolls up and down like a boat cruising over heavy waves. The intensity is up and down, as dynamic as it gets. It’s emotional, powerful, and thrilling. It’s a trip worth taking. No one is making music like this anymore. If this were 1968, the band would have been huge. The song “Shame” was released on the album Signs. It was released in 2019.
# 4 – Midnight in Harlem
Once again, we turn to the band’s début album, Revelator. One of the album’s most popular and fan-favorite songs is the killer cut “Midnight In Harlem.” Mike Mattison and Derek Trucks wrote the song. This tender song was perfect for Susan Tedeschi to lay into. While Tedeschi can whale with the best of them on the screeching rockers, her vocal performances on the ballads are second to none. “Midnight In Harlem’s” popularity helped drive sales of this record in 2011. The song received tremendous airplay.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Revelator album was a godsend for the music industry and its fans. The album was widely accepted by everyone and even earned a Grammy Award for Best Blues Album. Released on Sony Records, the band also benefited from promotion by one of the world’s most influential companies. It also allowed the group to maintain its eleven-piece lineup. Large bands like that reflect the days when groups like Chicago and Earth Wind & Fire performed with large outfits.
# 3 – Darling Be Home Soon (live)
This may be Derek Trucks’ most incredible guitar solo of all time. It’s tough to make a statement like that because he has done so many. But this one feels extra special. You need to stop everything you’re doing and listen to this entire performance. The band always sounds great in the studio, but they take it to another level live. That’s what all the legendary bands like The Allman Brothers Band and The Grateful Dead did.
# 2 – Leaving Trunk
We turn to the fabulous live album Live From The Fox Oakland one last time. The song “Leaving Trunk” was written by Sleepy John Estes. It’s the only song on this top 10 Tedeschi Trucks Band Songs not to feature Susan Tedeschi on lead vocal. This one sounds probably closer to the Allman Brothers than most of the band’s other material. It’s a party jam with incredible guitar solos and a tremendous grooving horn section that makes you jump right out of your seat. Mike Mattison delivers a soaring vocal on this one.
# 1 – Everybody’s Talkin’
We close out our top 10 Tedeschi Trucks Band Songs with the group’s clever and very original cover version of the classic song Everybody’s Talkin’. The song was released on the band’s first live album, Everybody’s Talkin’. The live album was released in 2012. It is not common for bands to release a live album after only one studio album, but with the release of “Everybody’s Talkin’,” the band made a statement everyone already knew: the Tedeschi Trucks Band was all about the live experience.
The song “Everybody’s Talkin'” was initially written by Fred Neil. The song became a big-time hit when Harry Nilsson recorded it in 1969. The song was placed in the movie Midnight Cowboy, starring Dustin Hoffman. The song won a Grammy Award. The Tedeschi Trucks Band version took the song in a completely different direction. It became not so much a jam-band exploration of the song as an extended version that crossed many musical genres while delivering one of the best Tedeschi Trucks Band recordings on record.
